450.0. "Exit to Eden" by 7361::MAIEWSKI () Tue Feb 01 1994 16:11

I saw a piece on Entertainment Tonight, a TV program based on "behind the
scenes" stuff in Hollywood", that said that Dana Delany will be staring in Exit
to Eden, a movie based on a book by Ann Rice. Rice also wrote the Vampire books
including "Interview with the Vampire" which is coming out and will be staring
Tom Cruise.

Exit to Eden contains a lot of explicit and kinky sex which is being put into
the movie. Delany says she doesn't mind doing the scenes and sees it as a
challenge. She said a lot of people think of her as "the girl next door" but
she feels that "the girl next door" is a lot sexier than most people think.

Ann Rice was interviewed and said that she's pretty happy with what she's
seen so far. She said that they were being true to her characters and that they
were putting the right amount of humor into the scenes.

They also said that the more explicit scenes would be filmed three times,
once for the European audience, once for the American audience, and once for
American TV. What do you bet that the "land of the free" will not be seeing the
more explicit version?

You want to bet the lastest skeem in video is to release the film in
it's unrated version. She anounced it on ET so my be is it will be
out in video within 6 months of the video release if the movie
    generates any interest.

I read this book. They shouldn't even bother with a TV version, 95% of
the story would have to be censored!

I'd like to see the movie though, so I'll wait for the unrated version.

Correction: The movie "Exit to Eden" is a new film about S & M
Dir. by Gary Marshall, with Dana Delaney (China Beach) in the lead
role as a Dominatrix to a resort island. It also stars Rosie O'Donnell
and Dan Ackroyd for comic relief. looks good, not mainstream...

Funny book (funny ha, ha; funny kinky). Can't imagine
what it will turn into on the screen.

This movie is also going to star Paul Mercurio who was in "Strictly
Ballroom" (great Aussie flick) - quite a different role, I'd say

Not mentioned in any of the notes so far, but the author of the
novel is Anne Rice ("Interview with a Vampire", et al.).

Sorry, I would have thought that was clear. I've
read the book. Thousands of people have read the
book. Thousands of people (including me), have read
ALL of Ann Rice's books, including the semihard core
porn "Beauty" series. _Exit to Eden_ is slightly
harder than your average Jackie Collins or Jilly
Cooper novel (so to speak ;-)).

Ann Rice writes her sexy books under a psydenum. What is that name and
does anyone has a list of these books?

A. N. Roquelaure? Something close to that is what
she used on the Beauty books. A different one
again on _Eden_ and the weird painter/paedophile book
(of which I've conveniently forgotten the title as
well as the pseudonym).

FYI: There are several notes about Rice in the KOLFAX::BOOKS
conference; note 1546 includes a bibliography, listing several of her
    pseudonyms.

Also starring Rosie O'Donnell and Dan Ackroyd. The trailer for this
    is hilarious:

(Male Stud)" I want to fulfill your deepest fantasy."
    (Rosie) "Okay, paint my house."

And another scene from the ad on TV.... Ackroyd and O'Donnell making an
arrest, with Rosie asking for Ackroyd's cuffs...
    Ackroyd "I don't have any"
Rosie "Great....we must be the only 2 people on the island without
    handcuffs"

I did also like the "paint my house" line...

Entertainment tonight had an interview with Dana Delaney about her role
and how different it is from the "China Beach" persona. She said she
enjoyed the role and that none of her friends were surprised by this
role, that there is this sexy side of her that is very much in
character for her. She enjoyed the role, even had a dominequx (sp?)
consultant for the movie.... they showed various clips, with no sound,
mostly of Delaney in leather (and not much of it).

TV ads say it is opening next week, week of Oct.10.

Siskel & Ebert, among others advise their viewers/readers -- don't bother.

Any other critics here care to add/comment?

I heard this joke over the weekend in a 1988 snoozer called "Tricks of the
Trade" with Cindy Williams and Markie Post. Oh well, I guess they said it was
funny, not original.

The guy who plays the "male stud" is Rael Andrews - a good friend of my
families. He is from Vancouver but moved out to Toronto about 10 years ago
to live with my aunt and uncle and get started on his modelling career. Had
quite a bit of success there, and slowly moved into small parts on tv and
movies (21 Jump Street, China Beach, Born on the 4th of July, Iceman, After
School Special - "Ban the Book" to name a few). He moved to LA I guess
about 5 years ago and has managed to do enough work to make a living. Rael
used to do stunt work but I think he sticks mostly to acting now because the
insurance for the stunt work was too expensive. I had a real laugh one day
when I was watching "Days of our Lives" and one of the regular characters
opened the door, and there was Rael on the other side. It's funny when you
see him in stuff that you are not expecting. He is by no means a "star"
yet, but who knows?... maybe one day. We saw Rael 2 Sundays ago because he
is in Toronto working on Norman Jewisons next movie and he was telling us
about "Exit to Eden" and what a laugh Rosie was. Apparently they shot 10
takes of the "you can paint my house" scene, and Rosie changed the line
every single time. I haven't seen the movie yet, but Rael says if you watch
his face, he has this expression like "Huh???" - he thought it was the
dumbest line, and now it's the one shown in all the trailers! He got to go
to Hawaii for 10 days for the filming - don't know how much money he makes
because I can't bring myself to ask, but I would guess that even the actors
who only have a very few lines must make pretty good money. I'm going out
to LA for a friends wedding in March and Rael has promised to take me out to
lunch... maybe he'll be filming something exciting then and I can go see him
work - that would be fun.

We rented Exit to Eden last night. I got terminally bored about 2/3 of
the way through and left to load the dishwasher.

There are a few good lines between Ackroyd and O'Donnell. Ackroyd is
particularly amusing when he's being uptight about all the kinky stuff.

There are several problems with the movie.

For one, maybe I'm too jaded, but there wasn't really much kinky stuff.
Or rather, it was there, but there was just no spirit to it. Yeah, there
are people in studded leather outfits. So what? A woman tells a guy
to get on his hands and knees so she can use him as a chair. Who cares?

The mood of the film is really odd - it bounces between moderately funny
Ackroyd / O'Donnell comedy and what tries (and fails) to be a vague
soft-core porn feeling. Oh, and there are diamond thieves. Sort of
an unintegrated mix.

Dana Delany is supposed to be a dominatrix, but she just sits around and
mildly chats with people, like it was all a party. I thought she was
really good, and very intense at times in China Beach, but there's no hint
of that in Exit to Eden.

I think the male lead is supposed to be keeping his emotions bound inside.
Presumably, this is done so his feelings can come out later, and the film
has the appearance of having a plot. Then again, maybe he just can't act.
Or maybe the directors hadn't a clue.

We recently rented this movie and I have to admit....I was shocked!

I could not believe just how much they "showed". I mean, I'm no prude
but leave a little to the imagination (which in itself can get you into
    enogh trouble :) ).

    I guess I expected a little T & A (typical to a rated R movie) but not
other areas and not one particular scene.

At any rate, I thought this was a boring movie and Rosie and Dan just
didn't "click". Too bad, because in their own right, I like them.

Rented it this past weekend. I've read the book and my other half
hasn't. I liked the movie, he fell asleep about 1/2 way through.

I wasn't sure how they were going to make it a comedy - book is
definately not a comedy. But I thought they did a good job of inventing
a good non-sexual plot which allowed for the intro non-sexual
characters to a S&M vacation island. I spent a few amount of time
explaining plot which, having read the book, I could fill in.

I usually like Rosie O'donnel and thought she carried her part off very
well. Dan Ackroyd was a great uptight character. I'm still giggling at
some of his scenes. Dana Delaney was good in the part, but I don't
think the movie did enough to explain her confusion between her job and
    her affection/confusion about Slater (photographer).

I'd be interested in knowing what version of the film Blockbuster in
the US is renting.... a previous note mentioned there would be 3
versions. BTW - I don't see how they'll ever have this for TV, either
it would be pretty short or a good deal re-shot! If an uncut version
was supposed to go to rental and that's what we rented, then it's
pretty tame, compared to the book.

I especially liked the Rosie's line at the end of the movie narrative
where she says the male stud (can't remember name) really did fulfil
her fantasy when he sent 4 guys over to paint her house.

    Overall *** out of 5.
