443.0. "White Men Can't Jump" by REGENT::POWERS () Mon Jan 31 1994 12:03

No topic yet for White Men Can't Jump?

I rented it over the weekend, and found it passable and fairly believable,
but I need some explanations....

Did Sidney hustle Billy into losing the whole $1700?
What did Sidney gain, since they lost the game?
Was it a setup with the street players in Watts?
If so, the leadup before Billy showed up was unnecessarily deceitful (in movie
making terms).

How come Gloria didn't pay off the Stucci Bros. before she left?
And what did they do? Take partial payment from Billy (How much did he
and Sidney win from the King and the Duck?) and fake the killing
for their own purposes?

I saw this a while back and I kind of liked it. Different role for Woodie. It
was not what I'd call a great movie, but it was good fun, definitely worth
renting.

RE the questions concerning what happened:

It's been a while and I'm not sure of this but as I remember:

>Did Sidney hustle Billy into losing the whole $1700?

  Yes, I believe so.

>Was it a setup with the street players in Watts?

  Yes.

>What did Sidney gain, since they lost the game?

Most likely he split the money with the guys from Watts.

>If so, the leadup before Billy showed up was unnecessarily deceitful (in movie
>making terms).

I'm not sure what you mean by this. A con has to be deceitful or it won't
work.

It was deceitful to the movie audience, especially considering the stuff
with the big black guy going to his car for his gun to knock over the liquor
store to get his stake for a bet.
I don't think Billy (Woodie) was even there for that part, so who
but the movie viewers was this setup supposed to deceive?

Oh, I thought you were talking about ...

... the basketball game in Watts. There deception was necessary to make the
scam work. I don't remember a guy going to his car for a gun but it's been a
while. Mostly I remember the basketball games and the thugs chasing Woodie
around.

This movie is a big favorite of both my sons (ages 15 and 12, both avid
basketball players). My 15 year old loves to inform opponents when one
of his teammates is burning his defender for a couple of easy baskets
    "Opie be p*ssin' on you!"
