400.0. "Myrna Loy" by 29563::WSA038::SATTERFIELD (Close enough for jazz.) Wed Dec 15 1993 15:42

Myrna Loy passed away today in New York at the age of 88, it had been an
extended illness. She was one of the most popular actresses to ever grace
the profession. She was probably best known as "the perfect wife". She
and William Powell first made married life appear hip and fun in the six
Thin Man films. She also starred in numerous films with Powell besides
the Thin Man's in probably the best male/female partnership (along with
Tracy/Hepburn).

She appeared in a *lot* of films, starting in silents in the late twenties.
She was typecast as a vamp (often playing orientals for some reason) for
her first few years until Hollywood discovered her considerable abilties
for comedy. She was with MGM for most of her career and often co-starred
with Clark Gable and Cary Grant as well as Powell. Gable was often referred
to as the king of Hollywood because of the results of a viewer poll that
conferred that title on him but what people often forget (or never knew)
was that Loy was named the queen of Hollywood in the same poll.

Her autobiography, "Myrna Loy: Being and Becoming" is one of the most
enjoyable of the acter autobio's. She was married four times but has
been single for some time. She was one of the truely class acts of
Hollywood.

Yes her and William Powell did several movies togther and were a great
    team - with true chemistry.

She also was Mrs. Blandings in Mr Blandings builds his dream house - a
true 50's cliche on American women but still enjoyable.

The quote I kept hearing on the radio was something said at an awards
ceremony in the 80's ...Said about Myrna Loy - "she could expression
more emotion in a lift of an eyebrow than most people can with the lift
in their voice" or something darn close to that...

She was fabulous in her day and I look forward to catching up on all
here movies - thank goodness for "Video Signals"

    Rest In Peace Myrna,
    Joyce

re: Myrna Loy

I don't know much of her early work, but she starred with Henry Fonda in
one of my all-time favorite movies, 'A Summer Solstice'. Don't watch this
one without plenty of Kleenex though....
