382.0. "Malice" by 16913::MILLS_MA (To Thine own self be True) Wed Nov 17 1993 16:51

I didn't see any notes on this, so I thought I'd start one. Moderator,
if there is one, please feel free to move it.

Saw "Malice" last weekend, and was pleasantly surprised (if you can say
that about this movie about the darker side of people). The acting was
adequate, the plot certainly involved, if somewhat needslessly
convoluted, and there was actually enough suspense at the beginning for
me to grab my husband's arm in a particular scene.

The movie is about a young couple living in a college town somewhere in
New England, a doctor who moves into town and their third floor and
what happens to them all when she is ill and he treats her. There is
a subplot of a serial rapist/killer loose in campus.

I particularly liked Nicole Kidman's performance. Heretofore, I had
considered her a definite light-weight in the acting game. She played
    it quite believably here.

    Definite spoilers follow:

    MAJOR SPOILERS:

Being used to Nicole playing sympathetic roles, the twist midway
through the film, where she turns out to be (one of) the villain, was
a big surprise to me. I did think her decision to sue while still in
the hospital was severe, but I didn't anticipate what followed. Once I
know she was a con-person :^), I figured Alec Baldwin (Jed) was in it
    with her.

I did feel the subplot about the rapist to be an unnecessary device. I
think they could have written some other way for Andy to find out that
he was sterile. At first, I couldn't figure out what the movie was
about. I kept switching from Andy to Alec as the rapist, only to find
out that the movie was not about that at all!

Still, I was involved enough not to glance at my watch even once.

I liked this movie in general, though I have to admit that halfway
through it, I was confused by all the plot threads, and ready to leave.
They finally tie them all together later in the movie. Some subplots
definitely seemed contrived, and could have been worked differently.

I agree with previous notes, overall a good movie, but the subplot with
    the rapist rather unnecessary.

One question: the actor who played Tracy's (Kidman) lawyer - his name is
Peter Gallagher - where else was he in ?

Peter Gallagher:

	Sex, Lies, and Videotape
	The Player
	Short Cuts

and on Broadway
	Guys and Dolls

Those are the most memorable items for me.

Saw this last night. Enjoyed it, but like earlier comments it was an
    unusually contrived plot.

A couple of 'where have I seen him before's after the spoiler ...

What films or TV series had Alec Baldwin (Jed) been in.

Also I recognised the Rapist/Caretaker. I'm sure I've seen him playing
a villain with long shoulder length hair. He was particularly menicing.
It may have been Beverley Hills Cop or something similar.

    Thanks

And the first thing I ever saw him in, which I believe was originally a
TV movie (that's where I saw it YEARS ago), "Dress Gray". Sigh......

I first saw him the soap opera The Doctors.

Was also in "She's having a Baby" playing the jerky friend of Kevin Bacon

He was also in Working Girl, with Melanie Griffith, Sigorney Weaver and
Harrison Ford. He played the "blue-collar" boyfriend of Melanie
    Griffith's character.

I remember this role because I had a hard time believing it was the
same guy who played Jack Ryan in Hunt for Red October.

Alec Baldwin is scary in this one. Good suspense, good story, and one
that holds your attention. He was also scary in "Miami Blues" where he
plays a real psycho. Recommend this one highly.

Does Alec Baldwin in this movie remind anyone else of Dr. Geiger on
Chicago Hope? I'll bet the resemblence is not coincidental.
