350.0. "The Three Musketeers (1993?)" by RNDHSE::WALL (Show me, don't tell me) Tue Oct 12 1993 19:34

Whilst standing in the line to get some popcorn for my viewing of
Demolition Man, I spied a banner on the wall of the Tyngsboro 6 General
Cinema that claims we will soon have among us a new film version of one
of my favorite stories: The Three Musketeers.

I've heard nary a whisper about this project before that. It seems
that Kiefer Sutherland and Charlie Sheen will be in it. Anyone know
    anything else about it?

Saw the trailer for it last night. I know very little about the
Three Musketeers story but this one looks like it might actually
    involve a forth musketeer.

Rebecca DeMornay is also in the film.

    It looked fun and funny.

Gee, Dave, I knew you'd be interested in this one... :-)

The Musketeers are played by Sutherland (Athos), Sheen (Aramis), Oliver
Platt (Porthos) and Charlie O'Donnell (D'Artagnan). Tim Curry plays
Cardinal Richelieu and Rebecca DeMornay plays Milady.

Sounds like an excellent cast. That's the good news. The bad news is
that the director was also responsible for "The Mighty Ducks"...

Premiere has a cover story on it this month and I'm looking forward to
it. It's from Disney/Touchstone and hits theatres next month, either
    the 12th or the 19th.

The 3 Musketeers *is* about 4 Musketeers, well actually 3 and a
wannabee (D'artagnan).

It will be interesting comparing it to the (at least)two previous versions.

I think I'll see that, because most parts of it were filmed here
    in Vienna and surroundings.
I only remember to have read some stories about the not gentleman-
like behaviour of the actors (esp. Kiefer S.) in the local discos !

Having greatly enjoyed the 1974 (I think!) version of "The Three
Musketeers, I had some serious questions about how this version would
    hold up compared to it.

My fears were groundless - this was a wonderful movie!!! It was fast
paced, packed with action, had a story line that was clear and made
sense, and was chock-full of wonderful performances.

Ironically, it was arguably the two biggest stars - Charlie Sheen and
Keifer Sutherland - who stood out the least. Sutherland's brooding
Aremis at least made sense once the movie let you in on why he was the
way he was. But Oliver Platt as Porthos was outstanding - clever,
funny, and swashbuckling. Chris O'Donnell was great too, with just the
right blend of naivete, enthusiasm, and bravery as D'Artagnon. Also, it
was nice to see Gabrielle Anwar on screen again as the Queen. She was
    perfect for the role.

However, in a movie filled with excellent performances, Tim Curry simply
ate up the screen as Cardinal Richeleau! He has the best sneer in movies
    today! ;-)

PS - Does anyone know what other movies Oliver Platt has appeared in
    besides Flatliners?

350.8A few recent ones...16821::POGARResident Movie CriticTue Nov 16 1993 13:4511
    Oliver Platt's recent roles:

Beethoven - one of the dognapers
Benny & Joon - one of the auto mechanics at Benny's shop
    	Indecent Proposal - the lawyer

Those are the movies I've seen him in very recently, but I'm sure he's
been in a bunch of others.

I thought this was pretty, but sort of bland (kinda like the actors in
it). It was definitely played up for contemporary silliness, sort of
like the 70's versions were (contemporary being for the 70's, in their
case). When I go to see these kinds of movies, I expect to see
derring-do and swordfighting to make me want to go swinging on
tapestries and such afterwards -- the Disney movie had plenty of that
but it wasn't done in any particularly impressive sort of way.

I thought the attempts at "modern" humor got in the way of the script
more than helping it. Tim Curry's role (as the Cardinal) should have
been far less tongue in cheek and more menacing. Rebecca DeMornay must
have had not much else occupying her time when she opted to do this
movie (her role was small, her bosom was featured, but she got the best
angst scene of anyone). King Louis had a really bad haircut. The plot
was sanitized for Disney's protection (no sordid affairs, only gentle
innuendo and lots of those French bosoms). Keifer was, well, Keifer.
Oliver Platt is following in Oliver Reed's role of Actor Most Prone to
Ham. Chris O'Donnell spent much of his time looking young and eager.
I kept thinking of Hot Shots when I saw Charlie Sheen. And there was
some funny continuity flaws for the observant.

With all that said, it wasn't all that bad, if you don't go expecting
much. Very prettily filmed. Lots of action (my complaint is that for
action, it wasn't very exciting). Lots of horses and riding such
horses around in a hurry. Lots of fighting. Lots of one-liners and
wisecracks. And the guy who played Rochefort *was* menancing and had a
great, threatening voice. If you're a voice person, it's worth
    watching for just that.

All in all, fun, but fluffy. Definitely fluffy.

I agree with the "fluff" assessment -- this is basically movie candy.

The next day, I rented the 1973 Richard Lester version and the sequel
(Michael York, Oliver Reed, Charlton Heston, Faye Dunaway, Raquel
Welch, Richard Chamberlin, etc.) because some friends hadn't seen it.
The older version holds up really well, having some substance to it.

A friend said he thought the book was eminently filmable (and the 1973
is very faithful to it); he couldn't understand why Disney felt the
need to mess with the story at all. The ending of the modern version
really strains credibility, given the historical basis.

I thought the 1973 movie version was one of the most boring movies I've
ever seen. Actually, I think the story itself is incredibly boring.

Anyone know of a place to buy copies of the 1973-74 "Three Musketeers" and
"Four Musketeers". This is a major favorite of mine, and I will go
to great lengths to get good copies of both.

Alas, I don't have cable and due to distance from Boston reception is
exceedingly poor. Also, I'm looking for a no commercial/non-butchered
version. Past TV broadcasts have "judiciously" trimmed scenes.

I have both the 70s "Three Musketeers" and "Four Musketeers" on video; I
think I got them from a mail-order place. You might try Critics' Choice
Video, or one of the mail-order services that claims to be able to locate
almost any video (not sure whether there are pointers in here; there were
in the old MOVIES notes file, I know).

Re .21: note 5 is for such pointers; feel free to add any that aren't
there now. ;-) [I did call Viewfinders re the Lester "Musketeers", and
they said it's been unavailable for several years, "but try us again in
    a year or so".]
