334.0. "Chaplin" by 12368::michaud (Jeff Michaud, Pathworks for NT) Mon Sep 20 1993 03:36

Robert Downey Jr. stars as Chaplin. Tons of cameos playing
his everything from his wives, directors, J. Egar Hoover, etc.

This film is based on Chaplin's own autobiography. It covers
all the way to when he was a child in England, to his writing
of the bio in the 60's from his home in Vevey, Switzerland.

A very good flicker, very good indeed. My only complaint is
in the very end when the give an epilog of all the characters.
In transfering to video the text for the epilogs is too small
to read for the most part. If anyone has a transcript of that
part I'd be interested in it.

We rented this movie last night. It was excellent. Robert Downey
JR was great as Chaplin. I also thought Kevin Kline was very good as
Douglas Fairbanks. I agree it is very difficult to read the ending
credits. I would give the movie a 4 out of 5.

Since I read mostly autobios and bios I was looking forward to seeing
this....I rented it last week sometime and I too enjoyed it very much.

I have a copy of the book it was based on but haven;t gotton around to
reading it. I remember most of the complaints the critics have but
like most movies and just about all non-fiction the critics claimed the
movie didn;t do him justice and even glossed over some of the more
tawdry things in his life....Frankly I expected that - I mean it was
based on CC's autobiography - so puhleaze....

Anyway - yes I loved the cameos and bit parts and I enjoyed trying to
spot them - Dan Akroyd did play Mack Sennet as a screaming, flaming
buthole - but hey - how do we know he wasn't really that way.....Kevin
Kline was *excellent* playing Doug Fairbanks and I'm glad they added
the part of the book publisher played by .......(drawing a blank here)
to help ease us through the very short story that covered over 80
    years.

Definitly worth the rental fee **** out of ***** (I would have liked
more on his film making and how he created his movies etc but hey, we
    can't have everything)

Of course - Anthony Hopkins - I could picture him and him in his many
roles including Howards End and Silence of the lambs etc....

    Thanks
