| I've seen this movie twice so far and loved it. It's about a young,
professional, gay man, who is Chinese, from Taiwan, and lives in NYC
with his white lover. His parents still live in Taiwan and, since he's
their only child, they are constantly trying to arrange marriages for
him, and telling him how much they are longing for a grandchild, etc.
He has never dared to tell them that he is gay.
Finally, in an attempt to stop their nagging, he tells them that he is
marrying a young Chinese woman, who in reality is just a tenant in a
building he owns. But, much to his dismay, his parents then tell him
that they are going to visit him to meet the bride. So, when they
visit he has to pretend that his live-in lover, of 5 yrs., is just a
roommate, and that his tenant his really his bride.
I found this movie very charming, moving and funny. The 5 main
characters are all extremely likeable, the acting is very good, and,
although the plot is somewhat manipulated it's well done enough to be
very enjoyable. I consider it a very well done, feel good movie.

| I just saw the "Wedding Banquet", with absolutely no prior clue to
the subject material., I have to say that I like the movie but
was surprised at the theme.
Gay relationship is (was ?) definitely a taboo subject in the Asian
culture. I have been in the US too long and may have missed the
cultural change. My perception was that gay relationship is
tolerated but at the same time not really acknowledged. There is
very little gay bashing over there, but then there is no gay
parade down Main Street either.
I like how the movie deals with the relationship, accentuated by
the clash of cultures. I know that this is really a US made movie
and the setting is in New York City, but I would expected to see
more shouting and crying from the Taiwan parents, when they found
out that their son is gay. I believe that this is still true, even
in the US, when it happens to an non-Asian family.
Was this film shown in the Far East, ie. Hong Kong and Taiwan ?
I wonder how well it played ?

someday, one of them come tells me that he/she is gay.)
