291.0. "Flirting" by 12368::michaud (Jeff, my name is Jeff) Thu Aug 12 1993 14:40

I rented this one because it was on Ebert's Top-10 list
of 1992 films. It stars two young actors whom I don't
know and Nicole Kidman in a very minor role.

The setting for the film is two boarding schools seperated
by a river. One school for young men, the other for young
women. The country is Austrailia. A young black woman (the
female lead) comes to the school and stirs curiosity amoung
the other students. A romance develops between her and
the young man who is picked on by most of his classmates.

I'm not exactly sure why the film is named Flirting, as
there really isn't much Flirting in this film. I'm also
not sure why Ebert had this on his top 10 list. It's
a watchable film but not outstanding.

The video is rated R, probably due mostly to the implied
sex and some male frontal nudity.

I was really surprised to see Nicole Kidman in a minor role
like this. Looking at the box it appears the film itself
may of been filmed in 1990 (MCMXC). She appears younger
in this film and maybe even a little chunkier. Must be
only relatively recently then that she's become a leading
	actress?

I rented this a started watching it, but was tired at the time, and
ended up going to bed halfway through. While I thought the premise was
interesting, and some of the scenes good, I thought the pace really
dragged (which is a complaint I tend to find myself having with many
    Australian movies, though not all).

I believe this is a sequel to the director's earlier work "The Year My
Voice Broke" with possibly the same actor in the lead male role.

re .2, that's funny. I saw "The Year My Voice Broke" in the theater
and enjoyed it. I didn't think this was nearly as good. Also, I
didn't recognize the lead actor, but I can't remember what the kid in
    "The Year..." looked like, anyway.
