260.0. "Johnny Suede" by 57133::HERMAN (What's so funny 'bout P,L&U?) Fri Jul 16 1993 20:23

Do you like Jim Jarmusch's films? (Night on Earth; Down by Law;
Stranger than Paradise; Mystery Train)

If you do, then "Johnny Suede" by Tom Di Cillo is as close to a Jarmusch
film without being by him as one could get.

Long panning looks at the seedy underbelly of Brooklyn populated by people
a few sandwiches short of a picnic. (I suppose I could just have said it's
set in Brooklyn and you could've filled in the rest.)

Brad Pitt plays Johnny Suede- a rockabilly guitarist in a near future
Brooklyn with a quiff so big he'd have to use a garbage bag as a shower
cap. His handsome looks are underplayed in the film, so his acting comes
more to the forefront. His acting works well in this film.

He has fantasies, he has weird friends, he composes strange songs and
generally keeps on keeping on. David Lynch or early John Waters are other
apparent influences on Di Cillo. The story doesn't exactly scream along
at warp speed, but there is a general plot thread that gets played out
regarding Johnny's love life.

Nick Cave (without the Bad Seeds) has a great bit part, as does Tina Louise
(without Gilligan).

Cheers,
George
