245.0. "RED ROCK WEST" by 49438::BARTAK (Andrea Bartak, Vienna, Austria) Thu Jul 08 1993 08:30

    Will start over here soon. Has got everywhere overwhelming critics.
    Stars Nicolas Cage and Dennis Hopper. Looks to be a "Western Noir".

    Anyone seen that ?

245.1Great film42837::PLOWMAND"don't phone, it's just for fun"Fri Jul 23 1993 13:117
    Yes, saw it last Saturday, extremely good, tense - but with some funny
    bits - thriller.

    Great performance from Cage, his best yet.

    Debs.

245.2Go see it -- this deserves a bigger audience3D::COULTERIf this typewriter can't do it, ...Thu Jun 02 1994 12:5414
    Three of us saw this over the weekend at the West Newton
    Cinema. Very good movie: script, acting, photography,
    it has it all. We could not figure out why this is not
    a "mainstream" movie, but is only playing in the small
    theatres. This is a MUCH better film than "Maverick",
    which is being praised for its "plot twists", for example.
    If you'd like to see REAL twisting in a plot, try "Red Rock
    West".

    This is a good one. Maybe word-of-mouth will carry it
    into more commercial success? Worked for "The Crying Game".

    This film is already at my video store.
245.4in "platform release" in U.S.SMAUG::LEHMKUHLH, V ii 216Wed Jun 22 1994 17:2916
Don't ask me why "platform", but that's the industry's 2nd level of
three categories ("general", "platform", and "boutique" or something
like that. "Speed" is Everywhere, "Red Rock West" is in about 4
Boston theatres, and "Fear of a Black Hat" is in 1. But I digress...).

Anyway, for reasons that escape me (and a number of U.S. critics), this
1992 film went straight to video in the U.S. But now it's been
released into a small number of theatres in the major markets.

It is very good indeed. Excellent implementation of the film noir style,
terrific performances, very funny. I won't quibble about believability
(I didn't believe in Cage falling for Boyle). I saw it at the Lex. for
a $3 matinee. Same price as renting the tape, but much more enjoyable
on a real screen.

> This is a MUCH better film than "Maverick", ....

	Having seen both movies also, I'll have to disagree. Maverick
	was a superior film, even if it was much more commercial.

> If you'd like to see REAL twisting in a plot, try "Red Rock West".

	I must of missed the twists you refer to :-)

> This is a good one.

	This I'll agree with on. This was a good film, and certainly
	worth a watch. A good film, not a great one, but a good one.

    Saw this on cable, it's a lost gem, Cage's best performance since
    Valley Girl, and Dennis Hopper plays a demented psycho beautifully.

245.8Movie made no sense, but Cage was goodTNPUBS::NAZZAROWill edit for foodTue Oct 04 1994 14:357
    I agree that Cage was excellent, but that anorexic actress drives me
    crazy (I'm balnking on her name - she was Donna from Twin Peaks).

    Why would Cage even think of staying around and not escape when he had
    the chance?
