240.0. "Godfather III" by DSSDEV::RUST () Tue Jul 06 1993 20:57

I decided to complete the set this weekend and rented "Godfather III",
despite the fairly lackluster sentiments it evoked when it came out.
And... it's kind of lackluster. The obvious stuff was beaten beyond
recognition (the whole "it's really an opera, folks" stuff seemed too
obvious - and too flat - to be either poignant or funny), nobody in the
film seemed to have the charisma (good or evil) of any of the previous
characters (save for Andy Garcia, who gave it a shot, but who then got
swept into a backwater and had to sit and watch for most of the rest of
the movie), the "big" plot seemed almost unnecessary...

It occurred to me that perhaps the point of the film (leaving out the
usual Hollywood point of making heaps o' money) was to show how
grindingly repetitive and unending the cycle of crime is, with a
handwave in the general direction of "...and the innocents always
suffer", but it didn't click for me. A pity; while I didn't expect it
to match its predecessors, I hoped it would cap things better. [The
last scene _was_ quite effective, I'll admit, but would have been
nearly as much so if it had come at the end of "Godfather II," I
    think...]

Too bad Duvall couldn't agree to the money, his character would have
    been very interesting in III.

With Mikey gone good, would Duval have taken over the family? I really
wish his character was in the film as opposed to "died of some heart
    attack a few years back"...

I know the Topic is supposed to be Godfather III, but I'm sure putting in
my two cents about the Godfather (Part 1) won't p/o anyone, right?

This is a movie that I can't believe I waited this long to watch! A
spectacular flick. An unbelieveable cast, Brando, Pacino, Duval, Cahn,
Keaton...and even good ol' Abe Vigoda! Seeing how the movie was made
the year I was born ('72) going 25 years with out seeing this flick was
quite mental of me. I even found myself being able to "feel" like I was
a part of the family. I knew this was gonna be a good flick right at
the begining where Enzo (?) gets a little choked up on his own words
and Dom with a slight gesture of his hand has someone bring Enzo a
glass of water. Probably my fave part!

So, let's recap shall we? Great actors/acting! Great story.
    Great action. All around Great!

And it's coming back to the theatres on March 21 (in Boston) in a new print
 - though the print they showed at the Wang last year didn't look bad.
