In order of greatness(in my opinion)

6 The way Star Trek is supposed to be,all action and adventure.
4 Plenty of action and laughs
     1 Very well made movie
     2 lots of action again
3 If it wasn't for the action this would have been last
     5 totally duff

I could(and do) watch 1,2,3,4 and 6 time after time.

I liked them all except Star Trek I which I thought was terrible.
In addition to the obvious rip-off from one of their tv episodes, I had
a hard time staying awake during the opening sequence while Kirk got all
misty-eyed staring at the Enterprise for 30 minutes!!!

146.5And another thing....VIA::LILCBR::COHENWed Apr 21 1993 13:3617
If I remember, the hype around the first ST was huge. I felt ripped off and
very angry that they didn't have enough imagination to come up with an
original story.

This was also the time Star Wars blew the doors open with their special effects,
so the ST team had to scramble to upgrade their special effects. To me, that
attempt was the whole movie (hence, the opening sequence). I suppose they
milked very successfully, the nostalga that the majority of the audience
felt toward the series, but to me, that was it...

Not only were the special effects better in the subsequent movies but so
were the stories, which was always ST's strong suit anyways...

Hey, differences of opinion are what makes America great!!! *^)

    re: .5

"Star Wars" made the ST makers "scramble"?? How so??

"Star Wars" was released in May '77; ST:TMP in December '79. If
anything, "Star Wars" was the reason Star Trek hit the big screen.
Originally, we were going to get another series.

Anyways, yes, the effects were ponderous and really slowed the movie
down. An interesting sidenote is that director Robert Wise didn't see
the completed film until about a week before its release. Kinda gives
you an idea that he didn't have much time to re-work the pacing/editing
    of it, doesn't it??

And seeing as everyone is giving their ratings, here are mine (from
    best to worst):

    	2 (great, just plain great)
6 (a fitting end to the series of films)
3 (even though Spock came back)
1 (more for sentiment and an awesome first night crowd)
    	5 (poor execution)
    	4 (terrible Trek)

The Trek films are well known for their even/odd quality split, with the
even numbered films being the better ones. Many feel that they shouldn't
make another both because they went out on a high note and because a number
seven being odd would be sure to be a lesser film. :^)

The television release had a few minutes added and is supposedly a somewhat
better film than the theatrical release, haven't seen it myself.

ST:VI looks and sounds fantastic on laser disc, amoung the top ten demonstration
discs so far. There's also a couple minutes not included in the theatrical
release.

My personal ranking of the films:

2-4-6 A virtual tie amoung all three of the even numbered films.
3 The best of the odd numbered films.
1 Looks pretty good but the story is subsumed, boring.
5 Shatner should stay in front of the camera.

146.9enjoyed, but forgotten :-)VAXWRK::STHILAIREdon't look backThu Apr 22 1993 13:5210
I saw all the Star Trek movies in the theater when they each first came
out, and I've never watched any of them a second time. I enjoyed each
of them while I watched it, but looking back realize that I can't
really remember a darn thing about any of them, certainly not enough to
say which was best. In fact, I can't even remember which was which!
But, at the time, I enjoyed all of them. (And, of course, I've always
had a thing for Captain Kirk.)

The only one that was memorable at all to me was the second one.

The other ones varied from boring to OK to a bit painful to watch (the
last one spring to mind with that statement).

Last year sometime here in England , I went to see down at the local
UCI cinima ( big screens and good sound ) , they showed all six trek
films in one night . I got a bit of a soar a** afterwards but it was
worth it , If you watch one after another , then you can see that they
follow in similar lines to the series , It was nice to see that most
of the continuity(sp) was the same through out the films and if not
then they explained why not .

I liked 1/2/4 the best. I liked the premise of I more than I like the acting
etc. I loved Khan and for sentimental reasons I loved IV with the whales.
V left me cold as it has most of the replies here. Enjoyed VI.
I have them all on laser disc and love to hear the Klingon ships/music all
around me!

Just a quick note . Here in England the are selling STVI on video , it
says on the back of the box that there is add footage of new film on it

    1) would this be like a special edition ver. or is it just klips here
       and there ?

    2) dose this added extra make the film evan more enjoyable then what it
       is ?

On the front of the box it dosent evan say anything about this ,
    strange...........

146.14absolute brillent42110::CABELFri Jun 11 1993 08:5781
well just bought the vidoe last night and what can I say , it is better
then the general release which was on the big screen .

    1) at the very begining before the film evan starts the is a sound bar
which can be heard , this for the Dolby surround sound * decoder
which says yes the film is going to sound brillent , not this naff
       one dimentinal sound .
In particular at the very begining of the film just as the credits
finish and when Praxes explodes , cranked up the vol. adjusted front
& rear , twicked the graphic and wallop blows your ears out , as
well as the L&R seperation when either people or ships are flying
at the corners of the screen .

       Sound 9/10

    2) The added footage makes the film evan more enjoyable as well as
filling some of the blanks that the original left out .
for those who havent seen this new footage or dont whant to know ,
shields up spoiler attack off the starbord bow .

Just after the klingon ambassidor leaves the presidents office , the
CNC , adrimal Cartwright , and another high ranking officer were
explaining on there emergancy plan to rescue federation personal if
they ever get captured by the klingons .
A particular line that was amussing was that when the president asked
about a possibility of war , they man giving the briefing reply was
' well , we will be cleaning the choromiters ' .

When spock tells scotty to do a visual inspection of the full
inventory of all the torpedose , then valeris comes down a pole and
tells spock and scotty that the gorkons daughter has been made in
charge and scotty says ' I bet that klingon bitch killed gorken '
and then explains the klingons way of life .

Then there are some more interior and exterior shots not seen before

Then at camp kittymor when the klingon is about to assasinate the
pres. scotty shoots the klingon . when everything calms down
Col. worf lookes down at the dead klingon and says that ,
' this isnt klingon blood ' and then the cnc takes this mask off the
dead klingon and finds out that it was the guy who was giving the
breifing on the rescue of fed. personal , and then some more added
shots of the E , and the Excell.

Overall these add bits makes the film much better and enjoyable . Its
also a plessent site to have the tesser promo picture , the one
with the klingon head looking up at the E. going into the stars , I
thought this was a much better picture then the theater poster , it
also dosent have the obligitary special edition plastered on it which
makes it a bit of a tesser .

    Overall improved 9.5/10

       Signing off ......... ED

ST-I Was a good movie considering that in the past the f/x and props
           where mainly all plastic..

ST-II A great movie loved every minute of it.

ST-III Good story. One major nit was Kirk's son David(should have been
                                                          a thunderbird.).

ST-IX Not a bad movie IMHO.

ST-X I thought that this was a bit lame in some of the story..

ST-XI A good movie to end the voyages of the old USS-1701.And it's
           fine crew..

    ST-XII ??????????............

All in all I enjoyed all six movies
and ST-TOS ST-TNG and looking forward to ST-DS9 when it hit's the UK.

There isn't a movie called "Star Trek VII"

There is a movie called "Star Trek: Generations" which was made after
"Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" and featured some of the
    characters from Star Trek VI.

Basically, it becomes a question of interpretation. Unless Paramount
later decides to put out something called Star Trek VII (please,
    please, let them not).

For the 'some' part of the above, are all the Enterprise bridge crew
present? Come to that, is it the Enterprise?

As a movie, Star Trek: Generations is pretty entertaining under its
constraints (i.e., it's got William Shatner in it). The members of the
old crew (they aren't all there) actually come off pretty well, but
their roles are brief. Most of the action takes place in the universe
    of The Next Generation.

I could watch ST II anytime - my very fav followed by VI and IV.
Number V was so bad that I have never seen it in its entirety. As far
as #I is concerned - it had to start somewhere and the same for III, a
good bridge to take us to #IV. MHO

Star Trek V probably would have been good had they not run out of
