Cosidering the way the last one ended (Alien III, which actually should have
been Alien II since the second movie was Aliens (1) and not part of the Alien
string and.......) probably not, but don't underestimate the power of hollywood.
I'd read that Sigourney had negotiated a "deal of a lifetime" and is financially
set, so she wouldn't be back.

"Alien" was pretty good, but the sequel "Aliens" was even
better. "Aliens 3" was a joke, don't bother renting it.

Actually I think it's a matter of taste. Both are excellent films in very
different styles. _Alien_ is gothic horror in space, _Aliens_ is more of
an adventure film. Personally I had always preferred _Alien_ but after
seeing Cameron's directors cut on laser disc (about half an hour of additional
footage which considerably improves the film) I'd rate them about even.

_Alien 3_ just doesn't live up to the first two films, it's not a bad film
just not as good as the first two. Whatever posessed the producer to hire
a director who had never directed a feature film I don't know.

I mean, its hard to do a sequel when you've killed off your main character
and when the actress who played the main character has vowed that this was
her last portrayl. :-)

Unless you meant the parathesised part:
The first movie was Alien
The second movie was Aliens
The third movie was called Alien III, which was inaccurate since there was
never an Alien II, clear now :-)

ALIEN:- I saw this film when I was about 10 , and man did I think It
was really scary . But seeing it now is easy as pie , the way
it was directed had sometimes a fly-on-the-wall type feel to
it , the effects were quite good for those days evan now it
still looks good . good acting and a good blend of characters
with different feelings to the situation .

            ****/*****

ALIENS & SPECIAL EDITION:- When I saw this I thought "oh , no mass of
inconsistances and nothing to do with the original " , But when
the opening credits rolled up and the old NARCSISSES(sp)life
boat , appered on the screen , I thought now maybe this might
be good . And sure enough it was brillent , different style to
the first one more of an action packed then all-out horror ,
but it had its gorey momments. The special ed. version was
much better in that we got to see the place with a hive of
activity , and those sentry guns !!!!!

            ****.*/*****

ALIENS III:- This film I thought had potential , you could tell that
the director was new at this (feature movie) job. but it
felt like it was a who's who on film styles , i.e -
John carpenter - a "thing" type feel , when they were in
the tunnels with flares and general style
                                  of the situation .
Ridley scott - the allover feel of the film , dark and
                                deppressing with a " I dont give a damn "
                                attitude .
James camoren - the action bits .

over all he also had some pretty good ideas him self , but there was
just somthing missing from this film that the other two had , I quite
enjoyed it over all mainly as a film by its self and not a sequal .

    ***.*/*****

What all of this films have in commen is that the effect were done by
APOGEE and the tom woodruff school of effects .

Other ideas for a new ALIENS film would be either on there home planet
or an awsome batteling ALIENS V THE PREDITOR that would be most
    excallent .

I really liked the 1st two, good action, good fun. The 2nd was probably
the best. I haven't seen the 3rd.

The 1st movie had one of the best slogan's of any movie I've ever seen:

"In Space, no one can hear you scream."

Would have to give both Alien and Aliens a 9. Relative to the time they
were made. Remember the scare at theaters when Alien first opened in
    79. Now on the tube it seems tame. Aliens, different film. Definitly a
Cameron film ie Terminator type, action oriented.

As regards Aliens 3. Total letdown. Big misstake. They could have kept
this story going at least for 2-3 more films. Yep the movie with a
bunch of bald guys with accents.

Does anyone know if the special edition of Aliens with all the added
footage is available on video? Someone said it is on laserdisk, but
alas, I do not have a laserdisk player.

The special edition of both _Alien_ and _Aliens_ are on laser disc only.
Most of what is on them would be impossible or wasted on tape. I've heard
of no plans to release the films with just the added footage on tape. But
then I don't keep up with tape releases.

Why would it be wasted on tape? Is that because the laser disc
version is letterboxed? They could (and I wish they would :-)
letterbox the special edition on videocassette.

The laserdisk collector's edition contains a full disk side that
contains sort of a slide show. You single-step through it, and read all
kinds of tidbits about how the movie was made, interspersed with actual
footage of them making the movie. It's quite a neat feature of
laserdisk technology that they were smart enough to take advantage of.
This would be impossible to emulate on a video tape.

In the _Alien_ special edition, unlike _Aliens_ , the added footage isn't
incorporated into the film itself. It's included in the supplemental section.
It includes the famous "coccoon" scene that was edited from the released
print (too intense?). This additional footage doesn't add nearly as much
to _Alien_ as the added footage did to _Aliens_ but is nice to have it and
does explain some interpersonal relationships more fully.

Both of these films are letterboxed on disc, which adds a lot to the enjoyment
of the film, not only do you get to see the entire film in it's proper frame
but you don't get dizzy from all the panning and scanning. As far as why
these films aren't released in letterbox format on tape (very few films are)
I'd say the answer is probably two-fold, one technical and the other market-
ing. When you view a film in letterbox format you're losing some vertical
resolution. This can lead, among other things, to a shimmering effect with
some images. This is an acceptable compromise for most people with laserdiscs
but with the much lower resolution of tapes it's usually not. The second
issue is that the marketing perception is that generally there is a lower
threshold of acceptability for letterboxing among tape consumers than with
laserdisc consumers. In fact most laserdisc consumers will refuse to buy
an anamorphic film that isn't letterboxed whereas most tape consumers are
just the opposite.

BTW, I also have the newly released Fox special edition of Cameron's _The
Abyss_ and it's the best of the lot. Not only does it have an additional
half hour of footage and fantastic supplementals, it's also the first disc
to be THX certified by Lucasfilms. It's possibly the best looking and
sounding disc on the market.

THX is a certification process done by Lucasfilms. It requires the very
highest standards in both video and audio. Up until now it's only been done
for movie theatres and home theatres. The _Abyss_ special edition is the
first time it's been applied to software.

I read that one idea for a Alien 4 was to have everything that

Actually, There have been a couple of comic book series, and 1 video
game based on the "Aliens vs. Predator" theme. Rumors are flying about
that if either series were to have a next movie, this would be it.

And for those who didn't already know, or notice, in the Predators
"trophy case" in Predator 2 there was an "Alien" head. Both Movies
were released by 20th Century Fox it is feasable that it might happen.

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the previous
two notes, but I did check something on the news or radio
about a couple weeks ago about them actually thinking how
they can bring Ripley back from the dead for another sequel
(and Sig. Weaver said no more, she should of learned from
Sean Connerry to never say never again :-).

Personally I think they should just pretend Aliens 3
was never made and continue from the story line of
	the 1st sequel.....

IMHO the problem with Aliens III is they let Sigorney W. stick her

145.33Another movie??44247::RBERNARDMon Jan 03 1994 23:3523
I agree with the previous note :-when S.Weaver said she wouldn't do
another film using Guns/explosives etc they should've dropped her and
used M.Biehn(Hicks) and made another roller-coaster treat like Aliens
(preferably with J.Cameron on the directors seat).I still think that
another excellent movie could be made from this theme but it would have
to be well written/directed and Stan Winston/Light & Magic Company
would have to do the special effects. It wouldn't be difficult to
    re-introduce the alien -
    1. Did the nuclear blast from the Atmospere Processor Unit(near the end
of Aliens) affect the Alien ship which is featured in Alien/Aliens special
edition.-It could still be laddened with eggs!
    2. In Alien 3 when they poured the Molten lead over the 'Rottweiller
Alien' it still survived even though it was in there for quite a while
so who said that the 'Baby Queen Alien' couldn't have survived when
ripley through herself into the molten lead????
    3. Or even man finds the Aliens home planet!!!
    4. Another spacecraft could be found with the ferocious buggers on it!

The list is endless but one thing is for sure they will have to do a
lot of thinking before making another or they will damage the story
even more than Alien3(It is possible).

By the way (for those who even care) those saps at TC Fox are kicking
around the idea of a directors cut/special edition of this film, with
an estimated extra half-hour of new footage. If it happens, it will

I think it was implied that the queen still had a couple of eggs left
inside her when she smuggled herself aboard the Sulaco, at least that's
the only explanation I can think of. What bugged me about Alien3 was
when the facehugger cut itself on the glass of the cryo-tube, bled acid
all over the place, but still managed to infect Ripley without melting
her face off, and ANOTHER one was still roaming around that infected
the dog. That was just too much to accept.

Could you also explain some more of this bit about a missing sequence
where they captured the alien? I'm grasping at anything which might
have made Alien3 a better movie...

145.37Directors Cut?YUPPY::SECURITYSecurity @LDOFri Jan 28 1994 17:0063

    re. 36

hmmm... yes. Not bad. A better explanation than anything I could
think of. I agree, its a bit much to swallow. I think too much
obscure information was squeezed into the opening credits sequence
(mind you, I thought its chop-and-change style was one of the more
    striking parts of the movie).

    In answer to your question:
The waste room sequence was in the novelisation of the film by Alan
Dean Foster. There is also a glimpse in a trailer that I think was
made for American theatres, of Ripley leaping out of the way back up
against a wall as a large heavy door drops down beside her. In the cinema
cut this scene isn't present. After the fire storm starts in the
corridors the alien isn't seen (despite extensive behind the scenes
footage of the alien suit being filmed in front of 'stage fires') and
then there is a limp fade into the aftermath/cleanup scene where they round
up the dead bodies. From this point two characters prominent in the
film are not seen again and I suppose we are to assume that they have
    perished in the fires.

The first is Junior (the would-be rapist with the goggles). In the
book they manage to trap the creature when Junior sacrifices his life
by luring it into the waste room with himself as bait. The door is
closed and the two of them (soon to become one of them) are locked
    inside.

The other character is that blood-splattered basketcase that they dumped
in the infirmary. I can't remember his name, but he was there when
Clemens the medical officer met his untimely demise. He wasn't present
during the firestorm (so therefore couldn't have been killed by the
flames) and wasn't led out by the marines at the end (only Morse was
seen to be taken out of the prison - the inmate who dumped the hot
lead). His absence could only be explained if 1) the marines, Morse
and the human Bishop forgot about him or, 2) the alien whipped back to the
infirmary unseen and 'popped' him or 3) - as is in the novel - he
escapes from the infirmary (with religous delusions that the creature is
a vengeful God/Beast 'dragon' that he has decided to serve and aid in its
holy mission) and frees the trapped creature by unlocking the waste room
door. The alien thanks him for his devout service by tearing him into
dogmeat and then it scampers off down the corridor wall, free.

Ripley and the inmates come back, find the door open with the alien gone
and the headcase prisoner in bits and then the theatre release film would
probably resume here as they now have to sit down and think of a way to
kill it, coming up with the idea to trap it in the leadworks.

I also wish Alien 3 could have been more and I for one would love to
    see a better, fuller version.

There were other small outakes shot, such as the dog owner finding the dead
face hugger after it had laid the egg in his ill-fated pooch.
You may recall in previews, footage of Clemens walking along a beach.
Apparently Ripley turns up in the surf and he carries her back to the
    prison complex.

These were all shot and removed (I think) because the studio wanted the
film to have a more 'audience desirable' (i.e. shorter) running time.

145.38Alien 3:The Gun (game)YUPPY::SECURITYSecurity @LDOMon Feb 21 1994 14:5432

FYI, there is a new video game in the arcades called 'Alien 3:The Gun'.

    Hardcore.

It consists of two rather large fixed pulse rifles (so two can play
similtaneously) that face into the screen and judder in your hands when
fired. The object of the game is to brutally gun down anything that
moves. Aliens and face huggers scamper frantically towards you with
murder in mind, and it is your job to splatter their green caustic blood
all over the walls before they get close enough to strike. Depending on
where your bullets hit the aliens, they will still try and crawl
desperately towards you, legless or armless, desperate to dish out some
of their special teeth treatment. At the end of every extended bout of
mayhem, you are forced to furiously hammer something big and
indestructable looking. Save your grenades for this. You can also
pick up extra life and a flame thrower (the latter really makes them
sing!) I've never really been one for the arcades, but this was a *hell*
    of a lot of fun.

If you're laid back enough to get past the idea of the presence of
pulse rifles, killer robots, 16' aliens, floating machine-gun remotes,
tanks, giant red face huggers, etc, in a game that is based on a film
that contains none of these, and you like the idea of going on a
harmless red-hot Uzi death spree, then this will prove to be quite
    diverting.

Try Virgin Megastore (or any large music/video store) or one of the
Forbidden Planets scattered around the country for the special edition
of Aliens. Alien (original version) is available in Widescreen from
    these places also.

There is a special boxed set - coloured black with the shape of a face
hugger sprawled over the top of it (about 69 pounds) containing all three
films. The additional alien footage is also in this (i.e. the Cocoon
sequence, etc) but I think this is included seperately and not
    incorporated into the first movie.

Are the scenes of lv - 426 that cover the time before the aliens invade
shown in the laser disc version of aliens. Is the cocoon scene on the
laser disc version of alien. And is there any uncut or director's cut

to see it again. It was once shown on a TV version.

    Aliens - Special Collector's Edition
This is the uncut edition and shows LV-426 before the aliens attack (as
well as lots of other scenes). It's available on VHS (or at least, the VHS
tape I bought in England three years ago) and on laserdisc.

    Alien - Special Collector's Edition
This features the cocoon scene (and soem other cut scenes) as extras on
a separate side of the laserdisc. I don't know whether they were ever
    released on a tape.

                           FOURTH TIMA LUCKY .

Four looks like being a lucky no. for Aliens fans, with there
favourite stars for a fourth helping of SF adventure .
Fox's ALIEN IV is almost certain to star Sigourney Weaver who is said
to be anxious to reprise her most famous role of warrent officer Ellen
Ripley after a three year brake. The fatel events in ALIEN III will be
explained as either that old chestnut, a dream (yawn!) or, more
probably, an elaborate virtual reality excercise set-up by earth
authorities to test Ripleys loyalty to the human race. Alternatively,
Weaver will play an android recreation of Ripley. Apparently, Weaver
has already agreed to make the film provided that either Ridley Scott
    or James Cameron directs .

Well, now there can be some interesting ideas for plot and all the
other nonsence that goes with it !!!!!!!!

For those of a more pleasent nature, in the same artical, they are
talking about the new STAR WARS films as well as a special edition
of Star Wars due to be out at the cinema in 1995 .
More on that in the SW notes file .

Picked up the March edition of "Cinescape" magazine the other day.
There's an interesting interview with writer Joss Whedon, Most well
known for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", re writes of "Speed" and
"Waterworld", he has now been asked to write "Alien 4" for "Fox" !
Here are a few sections from the interview....
"I saw Alien when I was 14, and there's not another movie that's had as
big an impact on me viscerally or aesthetically. Alien changed the
nature of science fiction as much as Star Wars did by turning it into a
working mans universe." Now science fiction is inhabited by you and me.
That's part of the appeal, along with the fact, of course, that they
created a monster that was not only genuinely new but also horribly
resonant. That's what was disappointing about the third one for me,
he adds. I thought the attitude and the feel were great, but people
want to see something different. They say,'We know the alien; we know
it intimately. What's new ?. Whats out there that's different?
When James Cameron made "Aliens", he did that in spades just with the
title alone. But then Alien 3 said, yeah, well this one is small and
    kind of slow !
"Ooh "he says with a laugh, that's scary !"
"The last movie was beatiful to look at, but it was neither exciting
nor scary, which is a travesty.
"I think the thing that upset me the most is that they actually had a
scene where people we didn't know were killed by the alien. That's
bullshit ! That totally betrayes these movies, because nothing is more
boring and pointless than somebody you don't know anything about being
    killed".
"I love finite space, I think you need that in an Alien film. That's
what James Cameron is so brilliant at, creating a space whereyou know
everything you need to know and nothing else ! What I'd like to create
is a very specific space like that, instead of doing something so huge
    that it becomes vague.
I got the gig by first writing a treatment that did not involve
"Ripley", then they said we want her, I guess the idea of doing an
Alien movie without an anchor makes them nervous. So I wrote a new
treatment, and I'm very jelously guarding the whole plot.
Although Ripley will be bought back thanks to cloning technology, she
will not be the same character that audiences met in the first three
films. The aliens too will be genetically different. This movie needs
to be more exciting and scary than any other movie that comes out. It's
the ride and a sci-fi coolness factor, taht's important. The genetics
issue is definitely secondary to other things. We're dealing with
Ripley's resurrection responsibly, We're not just saying "Ooh
Sigourney's back, let's go make the movie !" It's the central issue of
the movie, the fact that we're bringing her back. Once you do that
everything must be different. If somebody comes back from the dead,
especially in a movie where death is the ultimate threat, you can't
just say; It's okay, anybody can die and come back because we can do
this now. It's very important to me that it be a vetry torturous, sort
of grotesque process so the audience can feel what its like to be sort
of horribly reborn in a lab ! And Ripleys not too happy about being
bought back either, she's angry and has to deal with a lot of shit

Well at least this guy appears to be an Alien fan, his work can also be
seen in the soon to be releases "Suspension"..."Die Hard on a Bridge "
    !?
    Vince....

Aliens vs. Predator...

You can be the Alien, the Predator, or a marine... played out in a

It's awsome being the alien and getting to coccoon a marine... ;-)

Certainly with Corp. Hicks there was the mutual attraction/admiration

Ripley: You'll take care of it won't you?

WOW! This is so good! I had no idea how many Alien fans there are
out there...greeaat! I have watched the Director's Cut of Aliens
so many times that I can recite whole scenes of it to my friends...
(who thought I was crazy and noisy). Well...that was some time ago.
Can't say I can do it word for word now...my fav line:

Hudson: Game over man! Game over!!

    and:

Ripley: Calm down. This little girl here survived without weapons
            and training.
Hudson: Yea...why don't you put her in charge??!!

hahah....dunno whether I got it right. Anyway, I hope 4 is nowhere
like 3...all I remember was that I fell asleep watching 3 and
I only remembered the opening scene, the alien running thru a tunnel
and Ripley dying rather glamorously in a vat of boiling stuff like
in Terminator. I slept on and off....

    Well...keep yer fingers crossed eh?

since there was still a lot of discussion going on about the existing "Alien"

I also took the opportunity to clean out a few notes wherein things were

Thanks for your cooperation. Carry on with the "Alien" discussion. :-)

    update to Alien 4.
    Got it from the newsgroup.

Joss Whedon is writing the script and he stated in a Cinescape article
that Riply will indeed return as a clone. The samples of which the
clone will be made are samples of the true Ripley after she was
impregnated. The story will not take place on earth, due to budget
problems. The writer stated that Ripley will have something different
when she is brought back. She will have a telepathic/emphatic link
    to the aliens.

    thats all he would say.

I certainly hope they don't insult our intellegence and have the "clone"

145.87Alien 4... a fiercer alien may do the trickSHRMSG::KRISHNASWAMYSivaram Krishnaswamy @AKOTue Jul 18 1995 18:3428
Alien was absolutely terrifying on the big screen for a bunch of kids
who did not know what to expect or who had not heard of the movie
before. This was nearly 15 years ago. Even the trailer did not reveal
much and the impact of that scene where the alien bursts out of the
man's chest was devastating, especially when you had no clue of what
to expect. I remember that several people walked out after that scene
as the emotional upheaval was more than they could handle.

None of the sequels had this impact and while Alien III is so bad that
it should probably be re-named, I don't think Alien IV is ever going
to make a real difference. People who enjoyed the first two are going
to have expectations and even if these expectations are fully met,
there is still going to be disappointment, as the element of surprise,
which is essential to any real horror film, will be completely absent.

As some of the people have pointed out, Ripley or a clone, will only
make it worse and it may be better off by starting off with the Aliens'
home planet and who knows, maybe have a story line where the Aliens
in Alien and Aliens are discarded members, weak specimens of a more,
ferocious species on the home planet! If these are the weak ones, what
are the really fierce Aliens like ? That should keep some people
guessing and they should probably re-engineer the whole thing with the
help and imagination of its original creator , HR Giger. I picked off
some imagery of Giger off the net and the paintings are absolutely
chilling, with a dream like quality and an eerie feel about it.

There's a SF book out that combines Aliens with Alien. Basically, the
hunters in Alien go capturing queens (from Aliens), breed Aliens, and
then turn them loose on planets that they use as private hunting
preserves. One of the characters in the story is a human woman who
    becomes a hunter.

It would make an interesting action movie, although the plot would
    be a tad thin.

two waking up on earth after a bad dream. Meanwhile on ripleys trip
home, a deep venture scout ship had found the home alien planet.
The rest of the movie is a military mission to destroy the other

Then you should buy an Atari Jaguar and play the game "Aliens Vs. Predator"
It's a 3d-shooter/adventure kinda like DOOM except you get to play a
marine, an alien, or a predator. Each character has specific goals, which
are not always "kill everything". For instance, as the marine, your main
goal is to get out alive and blow up the base - so you don't always want
to go into a room full of aliens firing away - their blood is acid
afterall! That stuf burns!!!

The Aliens vs Predator comic book was brilliant and I thouroughly

up against the Aliens and that's Superman. As I live in the UK, I
haven't heard much about this title so I don't know if it has been

that covered from *all* point of views (pretending only from

Gee, I think I can settle this once and for all......

Alien 3 just wasn't as bad as most of you report.
It wasn't as imaginitive as Alien or as action-filled as Aliens,
but it had its good points.
It WAS imaginitive and action oriented, just not up to its
predecessors' levels.

I say "Go IV it," but don't try to put Ripley back in - I can't suspend that

I'd better put this lot behind a spoiler.....

Sigourney Weaver will play the 8th clone of Ripley. The movie opens
with scientists carrying out an autopsy on an earlier clone. As
mentioned in previous replies, Ripley's DNA is tainted by the Alien,
she has enhanced speed and agility and and has a telepathic link with
    the creatures.
Winona Ryder will play the leader of a group of mercenaries who board
passing ships, kidnap the sleeping inhabitants, and deliver them to the
scientists to be used as hosts to the Aliens !
Weaver and Ryder team up to stop the aliens before the ship they're on
    reaches Earth, but........

Weaver has recently said that "I am absolutely sure there will be an
'Alien 5', because I know how Alien 4 ends....I am the last person who
thought I would do another one, but we have a wonderful script. They
came up with the most provocative situation for Ripley to find herself
in. It is very unexpected and will suprise a lot of people, and give me
    an interesting job."

Joss Whedon says...."Ripley's cloning doesn't take up the whole movie.
I don't whant to elaborate too much, but beyond that there is a lot of
extreme action going on involving the aliens."

The pace of the movie is clearly back to the action oriented sequel of
James Cameron. Expect to see plenty of creatures and some serious
    firepower !!

They were born there. That doesn't mean they're English.

Veronica Cartwright played the other woman crew member in Alien. She
got wicked splashed when the alien came out of John Hurt at the dinner
    table.

True, if you want to split hairs...

I have a British passport and I wasn't born there, so it works
    both ways...

Yeah, I don't know if it's splitting hairs or not. Though Angela
affected an English accent when she played an Austrian in The Sound of
Music, neither of them has an English accent elsewhere. Could be they
    are military brats.

Anyway...though I like Angela (and she had a decent part in one of my
favorite fantasy movies - Flight of the Navigator), they made the
better choice with Sigourney for the lead in Alien.

    Get this....

One of the things that makes the aliens so tough is that it has
    	'total collective memory' !?
In other words, every alien remembers everything from previous
alien's life, so it's incredibly adaptable.

Ripley's clone will remember her previous human life, but since
she's only part-alien, she's not going to remember the life's
of ALL previous alien's, but will have some alien memories.... ??

I suppose this can only go in one direction.....

will Ripley want to stop the alien's from reaching Earth ?

Fox executive Jorge Saralegui says "I'm looking at this not only
as Alien 4, but as the 'Alien is back' movie".

    Alien Resurrection.....

Sigourney Weaver will become the third highest paid actress in
Hollywood behind Demi Moore and Juliaagghh Roberts. She will take a
percentage of the merchandising profits and a cool $10m.
