141.0. "The Sandlot" by 8269::BARRIANO (choke me in the shallow water...) Wed Apr 14 1993 15:33

I went to see this movie yesterday with my expectations set real low. I expected
a cute little summer movie that I could forget as soon as I left the theatre.
I was pleasantly surprised. It's funny and nostalgic and genuinely emotional
without being manipulative.

There are no major stars with the exception of James Earl Jones, who has a
cameo part towards the end. The movie is set in the summer of 1962. The narrator
is the new kid on the block (moved into town two weeks before summer break)
who is befriended by the leader of the local sandlot baseball team. The
adventures of the team that summer, shapes the rest of their lives. I
particularly liked the fact that the adventures were totally believable, not
like most of the genre that has kids outwitting bank robbers or flying
airplanes or rescuing the town from space aliens etc.

I really enjoyed this movie and highly recommend it. I expect it to be one of
the sleeper hits of the summer, if the word of mouth advertising overcomes the
inaccurate "their rough, their tough, their 4'11'' in their hightops"
advertising campaign.

Regards
Barry

Was that Dennis Leary's first appearance in a movie? (He was the
father of the main character) I am a big fan of his comedy and I was
really surprised to see him in a movie with a (fairly)serious part.

I saw this with my 9yrold and she loved this movie....for myself I
really liked it, its was kinda a twisted on Stand by Me/The Wonder
Years (TV). It brought me back to the summer days I was playing on
the sand lots day in day out rain or shine !

the kids that made up the cast were unknowns to me, Denis Leary was
very good in this roll, it was a small roll and somewhat serious but he
was very convincing as the step-father.

We took our boys to see it (they are 8 and 6). They LOVED it! So did
    I. My youngest wants a Wendy Peppercorn of his own!
