124.0. "Husbands and Wives" by 12368::michaud (Jeff Michaud, DECnet/OSI) Thu Apr 08 1993 15:55

It was interesting to watch this one given Woody's current
problems. It was both written and directed by Woody.
It stars Woody Allen, Mia Farrow, Judy Davis, Juliette Lewis,
	and others.

I enjoyed this film. I've heard this film billed as a comedy,
but I thought was more dramatic than anything. Woody got
a "Best Original Screen Play" nomination (I guess it can still
be called original even if it was an excerpt of his real life :-),
and Judy Davis got a "Best Supporting Actress" nomination.

In the first scene the camera motion appeared very jerky as
the camera kept panning back and first rapidly in order to
capture the converstation. I'd be curious if it was like
this on the wide screen or whether it was just a result
of transfering it to video (I'm surprised Woody didn't insist
on letter-boxing if the latter). After the first scene it
was ok, except that the editing was annoying in that even
in the middle of a single scene with out a change in camera
angle, the scene was very noticably edited together from
multiple takes. Maybe Woody was just experimenting with
	something new?

Oh yea, Juliette Lewis from Cape Fear fame (and also the infamous
hair-do at last years oscars) put in a very good performance.
She appears to be growing up fast.

The jumpcuts were there on the real screen as well. Allen basically
stopped imitating Bergman just long enough to start imitating Godard.

I'm not a Woody Allen fan and this was better than I expected. It
started off very badly, and the script was as annoyingly shallow as
usual, but Judy Davis's hilarious rendition of her allotted stereotype
kicked some life into the movie. (Between this, "Barton Fink", and
"Naked Lunch", Davis really deserves some kind of lifetime achievement
    award for saves.)

Juliette Lewis also did a fine job with a role that could have seemed
    purely condescending.

Well, I *am* a Woody Allen fan, and I enjoyed this a lot. In fact, I
thought the script was as pleasingly deep, as usual. :-)

Yes, the camera did jump around a lot even on the big screen. I was
able to ignore it, for the most part, but the friend I saw the movie
with complained of feeling dizzy. :-) I thought it was sort've weird,
and since I'm not familiar with the movies of the person he was
supposed to be copying, I was at a loss as to why he did it, but I
basically ignored it and concentrated on the story.

I thought Judy Davis was excellent in her role, and that her
character's reactions and lines were both very funny as well as
    realistic.

I thought this movie did a good job of describing what goes on in
relationships for people over 40 these days. I only saw it once and
want to rent it so I can watch it again.

Allen has done it again, in terms of realistic situations and
	dialogue. Liked it very much.
