121.0. "Cool World" by 12368::michaud (Jeff Michaud, DECnet/OSI) Thu Apr 08 1993 01:11

This has got to be the worse film I've seen in a long time.
Poor Kim Basinger, first this very bad movie, and then having
to pay $9 Million last week for backing out of an ORAL agreement.

This is supposed to be one of those mixed animated & live
acting films. However unlike Roger Rabbit, they didn't
do a very good job mixing the two (and the live actors
always visibily looked like they were staring into space
	when talking to cartoon characters).

Oh yea, even though this film would of been better for younger
viewers, IT IS NOT intended for children (cartoon characters
having sex with real actors takes place, and even though
not explicit, the subject matter exists).

1/2 out of 10 stars, this movie was really bad.

Saw this Friday night; it had to be the worst movie I've ever sat
through. My daughter picked it up at Blockbuster ... I wish I had read
this note file first! Blah ...

    Kim Basinger played Kim Basinger.

I gave it four for the Soundtrack, could be a little heavy for
	certain groups though...

They loved the premise so much they forgot to write a script.

People getting turned on by some toon is pretty worrisome.

1/2 of a star because it was in color...

On an intellectual and objective basis I would be inclined to agree
with you. I will admit, however, to being more than a little
responsive the first time I saw Jessica Rabbit on the big screen.

Here in the UK there's also a chocolate ad featuring

And there's always Garth and Wayne (approximation of quote only):

"Did you ever think, when you were a kid, that Bugs Bunny was pretty
hot when he was in drag?"

    "What? No!"

    "Me neither."

121.11one star for the animation only....DECWET::METZGERPBS = Profitable Barney StationMon Jun 14 1993 20:2021
I label this one as a could have movie...as in it could have been a lot better
if they dispensed with some of the useless animation (8,234 scenes of doodles
hitting other doodles with implements of destruction) and spent some time on
deriving a plot.

The potential was there but they should have made Holly Would a total bitch
(cartoon and real-life) instead of a bubble-head. It would have been better if
they had her as a real villian type that would do anything to get out of Cool
World. Sean Young would have been better cast as Holly (but I'm sure having
Kim Basinger in it got them the capital they needed to proceed)

they should have spent some time introducing the cool world characters. I felt
that we should have know who they all were as soon as Byrne jumped into the
world.

Decent premise but quite obvious that they enjoyed doing the animation too
much and spent all of their time/money on it instead of writing a script and
thinking about the movie as a whole...

121.13Rather dumb.MDNITE::RIVERSWhee!Wed Dec 28 1994 15:3561
A silly movie with no real redeeming qualities (save for, perhaps, Brad
    Pitt).

The animation was neither interesting nor awful, although most of the
characters flitting through the scenes were either utterly forgettable
or rather annoying. The mix of live action with animation reminded me
of pre-Roger Rabbit efforts, where the cartoons looked, well, like two
dimensional cartoons pasted onto the live-action. The story was
marginal, the script seemed to have huge holes throughout it, and all
in all, it was just kind of silly and boring.

The characters, including the protagonist (a puzzled-looking Gabriel Byrne)
had almost no personality traits to make them the least bit likable.
Our hero doesn't even have much of a personality, period.

He's a cartoonist, just released from prison, where he was sent after
having murdered his wife when he found her in bed with someone else.
Maybe he murdered her lover, too. It's not made clear, and in fact, the
whole subject seems to have no bearing on the movie whatsoever. Other
than to give a supporting character something to say. ("Gee, why don't
you write about how you killed your wife when you found her in bed with
    another man?" That's it. Really.)

He's also not a very good housekeeper.

Brad Pitt's detective character, other than having the basics of a
history established at the very beginning of the movie (which was
far more interesting than anything that happened once the cartoons
and the rest of the movie showed up), really doesn't get to do a whole
lot but stroll around, interact with the cartoons and platonically lust
after his "doodle" girlfriend. Who looks a lot like Kim Basinger's
character, but we can tell the difference because one is brunette and
    one is blonde. :)

Certainly the blonde bombshell, Holly Wood, was just was a sex-object
with just the barest effort made by the script to disguise her as a
plot device. She's a selfish, wiggly bimbo who probably is nice if you
wanna use the movie as a way to get in the mood for sex.

However, if you expect, or want more from 90 minutes or so than that,
you will probably want to give this one a pass. The soundtrack was
    pretty good though.

    Plusses:

    Brad Pitt
    Nice techno-dance soundtrack
Funny cartoon superhero at the end
I didn't pay to watch this

    Minuses:

    Everything else :)
