114.0. "The Player" by 12368::michaud (Jeff Michaud, DECnet/OSI) Fri Apr 02 1993 20:00

Rented this one the other day on video (I had seen it on a flight,
but it was a red-eye and even this film couldn't keep me awake).

Very interesting film. The directing did seem well done and
I can see why it was nominated for both best director and editing.
I think I'll have to rent this one again sometime. This time I
was watching the film as a whole and focused on the plot and
the actions of the main characters. However there was alot of
talking going on amoung the more than 65 actors in cameo appearences
(I got the 65 figure from the box, I didn't even try to count!),
and some of those conversations sounded interesting in their
	own right.

And what seems to be a real trend now (two other new releases
also had this, "Mr. Saturday Night", and "Singles"), there is
an interview with Robert Altman (the director) at the end, along
with footage that didn't make the final cut (which includes
	even more cameo's).

This was my all time favorite film of the year. Not only was the movie well
made, but it was great fun to pick out all the stars.

Most people I've talked to miss the part at the beginning where Buck Henry is
pitching the sequel to the Graduate. It's fantastic (but you have to listen
close to catch it) as he goes on pitching "... and Mrs Robinson is an invalid
confined to her upstairs bed room, but it's funny ... Yeah funny, I like that
... Yeah and then ...)

  From there it get's better.

Not only is it a great story, but it also gives you a good view as to what
goes on in Hollywood and how movies get made.

  Definite go see,
***** (One of the very few)

This is a good film for people craning their necks into Hollywood and
wanting to know how everything is done; otherwise, it's a film about a
VERY shallow and manipulative man (Tim Robbins, who is extraordinary)
who is losing his grip on the "in crowd" of behind-the-scenes Hollywood
studio executives and has a stalker following him ... I rented this
movie based on the raves of noters and I'm glad I saw it, but I think
this movie is definitely one that pleases the movie community more than
anyone else, and those who are real star gawkers. Without Tim Robbins'
excellent performance as the man with no soul, this movie wouldn't have
    been half as good.

114.3I like it.24751::MILANESEMon Jun 28 1993 17:3917
I saw this movie this past weekend and
    like it very much.

Tim Robbins, the main character, is
a man who gets away with murder, both
    literally and figuratively. He represents
the worst in values that our society has to offer,
yet because he is rich and powerful gets away
    with it.

I think Altman was making a real statement
about the sorry state of affairs in Hollywood
and everyplace else. That money and power
make you a winner, no matter what you do.

    Sigh....
114.4It's not a movie community pleaser57176::MILANESEMon Jul 26 1993 18:1217
Actually, this movie did not please the
movie community since it depicts them
    as shallow, manipulative, and deadly.

Many critics feel that this was a very
good film and did not receive the award
nominations for the very reason of its
    depiction of Hollywood moguls.

I liked the movie, but found it unsettling,
    since this guy literally...

gets away with murder. Plus didn't you
    find his character most unlikable?
