106.0. "The Unforgiven" by 25415::MAIEWSKI () Mon Mar 29 1993 22:25

After seeing the Unforgiven, we completed seeing all 5 of the Oscar nominated
movies. Once again, my feeling was that while this is a really good movie, it's
just not a great movie. What it is, in fact, is a rather typical Clint Eastwood
flick.

I find that there isn't really a whole lot to say about this film. I've
always liked Clint Eastwood. I liked him as Randy in the TV series Raw Hide, I
liked him as Dirty Harry, and I liked him as the cowboy in all of those
Spaghetti Westerns. I didn't see the one with the monkey.

It's always the same story. Clint always plays the hardened hero/anti-hero
who sees life more simply than others and asks less out of life than others.
He's always struggling with some deep emotion, then when the *** hits the fan
he always goes in and clean's things up the same way.

There are always the understated lines:

    - "Now ask yourself, are you feeling lucky?"
    - "Looks like your *** out of luck"
    - "Go ahead, make my day"

There's always the girl he can't quite get close to, always the friends
who get along with him because they don't ask questions and there's always
his horse/.45 who is his only real friend.

And it's always fun. Once in a while he fools you into thinking it's a
different sort of movie, but by half way through you see the gimmick and it all
falls into place. He appeals to that basic desire in all of us that maybe
we could be the hero if only we could get by taking as little from life as
he does.

  Vintage Eastwood,
  ***,
  George

George, I must disagree. I thought this movie was classic. Perfectly cast
too (Gene Hackman is such a marvelous bad guy. My dream movie is Clint and
Arnold as the good guys, versus Gene Hackman, Martin Landau, John Lithgow,
and James Spader as the bad guys.)

Everything was right. Cinematography, acting, screenplay, direction, timing,
........just beautiful.

I usually can't stand Westerns, but this was magnificent.

I agree with .0 the movies was okay becasue it was a Clint movie..
but it was not great by any means and I really didn't think it
deserved a Oscar for Best Pitcher. IMHO

106.6It should NEVER have won the Oscar!!!! 3694::BELFORTIMrs. Frank N. FurterMon Jul 19 1993 14:026
Rented this over the weekend.... lots of hype for a nothing movie!!!!

I was very disappointed in it! Just another Eastwood western as far as
    my family was concerned!

2.5 out of 5 for the movie itself, and -5 out of 5 for originality!

That's exactly what was intended (ie. a western)!! No "good"
westerns have been made in the last couple decades.

If you don't like Westerns at all ....

Never saw it. When did it come out and who was in it? (maybe
you should create a new topic for it)

It must have come out in the '86-'88 time frame...

I enjoyed it almost as much as I enjoyed Unforgiven.

"Pale Rider" was a lot better than profits (and critics) suggested. As
an Eastwood fan, I put this up right up there with "High Plains
Drifter." Good supporting cast, too, with (d'oh, forget the name of
the actor Clint helped out), Chris Penn, and William Dysart.

Sean,

Michael Moriarity, I believe. He stars as one of the lawyers on tv's
Law & Order.
