    [vms alpha 6.2; sqs 6.1-0; rdb 6.1-0; ucx 3.3 eco 10]
    
    	Customer's system won't connect to TCP/IP using UCX, dies with
    	sts =2312, has BG0: UCX$DEVICE device.  The IVP dies with a
    	curious message:

    SQLCA: SQLCODE: -2003  SQLERRD[0]: 61 SQLERRD[2] 0
    %SYSTEM-?-BADESCAPE, syntax error in escape sequence
    *** SQL Services IVP failed when accessing the  generic class ***

    **** VAX SQL Services test failed ****
    
    	Note that the DECnet part of the test works fine and that people
    	are regularly using DECnet to connect through generic just fine.
    
    	SQLSRV$.LOG excerpt:

    0225 1857196302710  Error, TCP/IP Server activation failed: sts = 2312

    	Of the dozen or so SQLSRV$.LOGs they have online over the past
    	couple of months all of them look like the above -- but one --
    	which started up *successfully* according to the log.  I
    	didn't see any suspicious edits around that window though, and
    	it is quite dead at the moment.
    
    	No bugchecks.  Nothing suspicious in OPERATOR.LOG concerning UCX.  
    	The accounts don't seem quota starved, etc.  A quick pass with
    	WATCH_QUOTA.COM showed nothing even on the way to ill.
    
    	Any ideas ?

it should say TCP/IP Server activated

start sql/srv after tcp/ip is started.

    You nailed it Jerry -- increment your BREWS_OWED.
    
    I had tried restarting it before, when it worked in the log (I had
    the date wrong), but there were PC problems at the time too that
    had not yet been overcome.
