    There are soooo many books and magazines to choose from out there!
    When I got my first birds, I started collecting the TFH Publishing
    books, then, the deeper I got into birds, the more I needed a more
    detailed book. TFH is good for general information. Their breeding
    information is vague and misleading in many cases.

    I subscribe to American Cage Bird Magazine, and sometimes write
    for them too. They have a wide range of topics ads and information.
    I let my Bird Talk lapse.

    I subscribe to a veterinary clinic on aviculture that comes every
    2 months. This is a little expensive and it comes from Saunders
    Publishing in Pennsylvania.

    The two most helpful books I own on breeding, care and all around
    information are: "Estrildids of the World" and "Parrots of the World"
    that can be obtained from a good book store or through Avian
    Publications. Then there is my avian bible..."Avian Clinical Medicine
    and Surgery". I would not be without that book! It covers husbandry,
    breeding complications and maintenance. I have very often times
    loaned this book to veterinarians upon thier request until they
    purchased their own copies.

9.2Cockatiel LiteratureWITNES::MACONEIt's the story of a man named BradyThu Dec 08 1988 11:2510
    Can anyone recommend a good book on cockatiels for me? I would
    like somthing that just covers basic care for now. Publisher, etc
    would be helpful.

    Also, what periodicals are available that would best be suited for
    a cockatiel owner? Subscription information would be helpful here.

    thanx.

    Nancy,

    Bird Talk Magazine spends quite a bit of time on Cockatiels. I don't
    know where you are located, but if your local pet store doesn't
    carry it, I could send you a subscription card via interplant mail.

    I enjoy Bird-Talk but have never seen American cage bird. Bird-Talk
    cover a full range of birds and topic and I enjoy the letters from
    the readers. They also have a lot of color pictures.

    If you are interested I could send a subscription form to your Mail
    stop.

9.6Stroud's Digest on the Diseases of BirdsMPGS::TAIare we having fun yet??Tue Feb 07 1989 15:4210
    Does anyone know anything about the book by Robert Stroud (The
    Birdman of Alcatraz), it's called Stroud's_Digest_on_the_Diseases_of_
    _Birds?

    I don't own any books on bird-health and was wondering if this
    was a good book for me to order.

    Thanks,
    Juliette

9.7It's expensive but worth itMANILA::WALZWed Feb 08 1989 22:403
    The absolutely best book on avian medicine is Clinical Avian
    Medicine and Surgery by Harrison and Harrison. It is my bible.
    The Stroud book is outdated.
9.8Rosemary Lowe in the UKMUNCSS::BURKEWed Feb 15 1989 13:5918
    I did some limited research here in the UK with regard to authoritative
    bird literature. The impression I got was that Rosemary Lowe (Low ?) is
    the expert. I bought one of her many books, and it is a comprehensive
    coverage of parrots & parrotlets. Also, the colour plates are excellent
    (which probably explains the price - about 25 pounds).

    One good example: I read many books (usually the small type of
    'booklet'), and observed how they all noted how difficult it was to
    non-surgically sex greys. They gave various clues (eg. eye shape,
    talk-ability, etc), but we still had no ideas. I then consulted
    Rosemary Lowes' book. Result: no problem - we have a male and a female.
    No doubt about it. It mentioned that females spend more time on the
    ground, and perched more hunched than a male. It was quite funny
    really; my wife read out what the book said, and I looked at the two
    parrots. Basil (our male) was sitting proud in his normal
    out-of-cage place on a branch above his cage. Lucy (the female) was
    crouched in her normal 'nest' under a writing desk. No doubt about it
    as far as we were (and are) concerned.

9.10BirdTalk Oct '87 issue, does anyone have it?MPGS::TAIare we having fun yet??Fri Feb 17 1989 15:4715
    Does anyone have the Oct '87 issue of BirdTalk?
    I think that's the issue....I'd like to get a Xerox copy of
    the article on houseplants (which are harmful and which aren't)

    I did find a listing of plants in the Old_Birds notes,
    but I would still like a copy of the article to read.

    Thanks,
    Juliette

    PS. If you can mail the Xerox copy to me it would be greatly
         appreciated!

9.11Lori info?UTROP1::BOSMAN_PMon Jun 19 1989 08:1214
    Is there any literature about Loris available?
    Since I am not familiar with the US magazines it may be possible
    that an article about Loris has appeared in the past.

    If someone knows of a book please state the ISBN number. With this
    international book code I will probably be able to get it in Holland.

    I also would like to know which magazines are worthwile for a parrot
    anthusiast. A Xerox of the page with publishers info would be
    appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

9.12American Cage BirdBPOV02::PULSIFERDoug Pulsifer DTN 296-3332, BP01Thu Oct 11 1990 14:1821
    At many Grocery stores they have handouts for MAgazine subscriptions
    and I have seen the Bird talk one for a long time. This last week I just
    saw that American Cage-Bird also has these out. The picture on the
    cover is a nice one of Hyacinth Macaw.

    Per the handout:

    You can send in the postage paid card(the postage on the card is free
    if mailed in the U.S. only) and they will:
    Give you a subscription of 15 issues for $21.95
    Send you a Back issue free upon receipt of the $21.95

    If you are not totally satisfied with your first issue you can call or
    send a note cancelling the subscription. They will at that time refund
    your money minus the cost of one issue.

    If anyone cannot find these in the stores let me know and I will try
    pick some up send them to you.

    The 800 number if you like to give credit card info over the phone is
    1-800-359-2473.
9.13looking for finch magazinesNEWVAX::WHITMANgun control = 5% gun + 95% controlFri Apr 05 1996 12:269
Does anyone know of a reasonably complete list of bird related magazines?

We've been raising hook-bills for awhile now but are now getting into finches
as well. New type of birds means lots of new material to learn. Any pointers
would be greatly appreciated (especially magazines dedicated to finches.)

Thanks,

Al
