257.0. "Bacteria ?" by GIAENG::PULSIFER () Thu Sep 14 1989 13:11

I would like to hear what people know about bacteria and
        their viewpoints.

I have been told that I have to be careful about
introducing negative bacteria to birds and that if I am
to give my birds greens, I should wash them in a bleach
and water solution first. I have been doing this with
both the store bought stuff and what I pick in my yard
since the vet found negative bacteria in a gram stain.

I have not been doing this to the frozen vegetables
        though, should I ?

I don't know a lot about Bacteria, but I have never heard
anyone worrying aout Bacteria on commercial seeds or
treats. Are they treated to inhibit bacteria ?

I have also been careful that when I share my sandwich
with Buddy that he doesn't eat from where I bit it.

birds pick up a certain amount of bacteria just by picking at things.
Yes it is good to not let then eat anything that has been in your
mouth. I feed acidaphus to my birds the first 2 weeks of acquireing
one and any time they have strange behavor or droppings. I have
not been to a vet in 3 years and do not plan to give antibotics
    eather.

I do wash the greans but I also feed almost all organic produce.
I also have few birds in large cages. to me they are small but
every one thinks they are two big.
257.2My Two Cents Worth...VMSSG::VMSINQWed Dec 27 1989 19:1826
Good questions Doug! Here again are my 2 cents worth.

Charla's Acidopholys is a good preventative. Remember, we put that in
the baby formulas??? Birds do not manufacture negative flora...

Bleaching is still the safest bet. But, I would not bother the seed.
Your point is well understood though. The seed is processed somehow
that has always made me wonder how it can still be nutritionally
valuable. You could mist the seed, but then you invite mold spores in.
That's as bad or worse as negative bacteria. We could get real
paranoid, as I have been in the past, a bout what happens and could
    happen...

And I still bleach branches B-4 i heat them to dry them off well
beforee the birds get them. Lillacs included!

Gee Doug, sorry I keep missing you when you come by my house!!!! Tom
tell you about school and all that nonsense I'm keeping up with lately?
I feel like I entered the ring with two pros and me and i'm on the
    loosing end!

    Talk to ya later!!
