120.0. "no white in droppings" by SVCRUS::KROLL () Wed Feb 15 1989 23:55

    I noticed today my 19 year old pink Burke Cock has no white in
    his dropings. I must have started late last night or this morning.

    This makes me sad because I won'ted to see him get the alloted 20
    years they are expected to live. He has no other visable problems
    and do not tell me to take him to the vet. every time I have gone
    with one of these size birds they die from the stress.

    Other than keeping him worm is there any other suggestions. He
    really is a grand bird.

    How is your Burke doing? Didn't see this until today, but wanted
    to suggest that you could always take a stool sample in to the vet
    to check for parasites, etc. That wouldn't stress the bird.

    You might also try a general purpose antibiodic in the water. At
    his age, it probably can't hurt.

120.2Sorry Charla!SAGE::CARLSONJMon Feb 20 1989 19:1311
    Hi Charla!

    It's Jean H! We both know, especially given the age of the age
    of the bird that he is probably not going to make it to 20. The
    white in the stool is urea,which is like urine... I would be sure
    to keep him warm, 85 degrees, as you already said, and be sure he
    gets plenty of water! But, it sounds like a kidney may only be
    functioning on 4 cylinders rather than 6. Sorry to hear of this
    Charla! How does he seem now?

120.3Does it have to have white?AKOV13::LAJEUNESSEMon Feb 20 1989 20:1518
    Hi Jean,

    I heard that you were back but "unable" to get to a terminal.

    I just wanted to say that my Grey sometimes has droppings with no
    white in them. This only seems to happen when she gets a lot of
    grapes or peaches or most fruits or veggies. You know that I have
    been to the vet to have this check and went through a real ordeal
    over it. Does it alway have to have white in it? These dropping
    are clear with some green.

    Good to see you on the tube again.

120.4Omnivoracity --> psychedelic droppings !!!MUNCSS::BURKETue Feb 21 1989 07:4911
    	Our female Grey (Lucy) can eat just about anything you give
    her. Her droppings sometimes have no white, depending on what she's
    been eating.
    	We enjoy Indian (Asian) cooking, and sometimes Lucy gets her
    mega-favourite - a Tandoori chicken leg. She eats the lot - crunches
    the bone, etc. You should see the bottom of her cage the morning after
    such a treat - I'm not even going to start to describe it. That's one
    of the reasons this type of treat is rare. However, it's evident
    that she really enjoys the treat, and she seems OK after.

    Thanks Jim,

    That makes me feel better. I was really worried about this when
    I first got her. What made it worse was I took her to the vet for
    tests and the test results came back as kidney falure. When they
    ran them again everything came back fine. There must have been
    somekind of a mix up.

120.6I wanna cowboy!!! Oops, I gots one! 8^}SAGE::MORINTue Feb 21 1989 15:3527
    HI YAWL!!! (The cowboy (by husband) accent rubbed off again! 8^})

    Anyway, don't be scared again Mark! Sinbad has a perfect home and
    a doting daddy!!! See, parrots and parrakeets metabolize their
    foods differently. The Bourke that Charla is referring to is a
    small, slender and simply lovely bird, almost the size of a robust
    cockatiel. They, as they get older, often display organ failure
    as we do! 19 is a long time to live. The books say 19 - 20 years,
    60 for parrots, 15 for finches...but we all know, it takes VERY
    special care to achieve that longevity! I have no doubt at all
    that Charla has provided such care to these Bourkes! She talks
    about them like we talk about dogs!

    I have to agree about staying out of the vets office currently too!
    Stressing the bird more in her condition could do more harm to good!
    Maybe, just a stool sample to the office would be a good idea!
    One thing to look forward to is a small parasite....and that is
    most always treatable...and then this little guy will see it's 20th
    birthday! Hope we get invited to it!

    Waddya say Charla?

	Love and hugs!

120.7just getting oldSVCRUS::KROLLFri Mar 03 1989 01:209
    Well he did start up again after I put in all his favorite treats
    but he does not have the volume as before. he is deffently looseing
    weight and stools have no parasites. I do not believe in
    indiscriminate use of antibotics but have found a powdered acidalphus
    that has knocked many an infection out with in a week. I did try that
    on him with no difference.

    As long as he is comfortable & happy at this point I plan to let
    him be. thanks for the help.
120.8-{ no green }-ALCTRZ::BROOKS_DOThu Mar 16 1989 17:2611
    I have a parakeet and for the last three days he has not had very much
    green in his droppings they are firm but very light almost gray.
    they are also the normal shape ust the color is different.
    I have noticed they are getting better but still not normal.
    What could be causing this? Baby blue is 7 years old. I have been
    giving him a little extra super preen on his food just for the heck
    of it.

    P.S. I have never see this little bird drink water it must be osmosis.
