158.0. "wooden cages- y/n??" by POLAR::FERGUSONR () Mon Apr 10 1989 16:43

    Hello,

am picking up 2 zebra finches and two white with blue budgies ,
tonight. have never owned birds before, but am buying some books
    at the same time.

the kids will have them as pets , and as i carve birds , i'll use
    them for study purposes.
    Question:

being also a woodworker , i'd like to build some wooden cages using
small diameter maple dowelling and maple frame work.
is this a bad idea - that is , will the birds eat through the maple?
if they wont eat through , i suppose i'll need to use a non-toxic
finish on the wood , right. ( the idea is one cage for the finches
(male and female)and one cage for the budgies(two females).

please reccommend dimensions for the cages.

Thks,

    Professori.

Be warned that most all hookbills (including budgies) LOVE to chew
    on wood.

Wood cages are beautiful but impractical for the health of the bird.
Wood is harder to keep clean then metal and you can't properly
disinfect it if you need to.

For the finches, it wouldn't be a big problem. For the budgies
    it would.

I won two budgies at a Bird Club Meeting and had to keep them in
one of my spare finch breeding cages over night. The breeding cages
are wire mesh, but we made a wooden bottom with a linolium liner
for these cages for easy cleanup. They couldn't get to the linolium,
but could get to the wood lip and in just one night, they made
    noticeable damage.

    SO-O-O-O-O-O,

if i want to be pig headed about it, stay with the store bought
wire cages for the budgees ( and the bloody canary she's going to
pick up tonight = 5 birds total) and build a wooden one for the
    finches.

re: wooden one for the finches

the book i bought at the time a got the birds , says aprox. 1-2
cubic feet per bird and when more than 1 cubic foot total make the
floor the largest of the three dimensions.

presume 1/8 or 1/4 inch maple dowel with max. of 1/4 inch space
    between bars will suffice.

BTW- the book suggests having two or 6 or more per cage , but not
3,4 or 5 as they will gang up on the runt . is this likely?

    thks,

    re .4

I had problems with having 4 finches in a cage. I now have 7 and
they do fight occasionaly, but there are so many to fight with that
there are always 3 or 4 with bald patches.....no deaths (knock on
wood) as when I just had 3 or 4 in a cage.

    good luck.
