800.0. " AVIAN EXAMS " by STOWOA::WERBER () Tue Apr 27 1993 14:48

I'll be making an appointment at Littleton Animal Hospital for a
"Spring checkup" for my yellow naped amazon. Other than having him
initially checked out before I bought him, he's never been for an
    examination.

    Can you please post:

o	What tests to request/expect to be performed (especially in
        regard to avian diseases)?

o How often should an exam be performed?

o Average $$ for a regular exam (just so I know what to expect)?

    Thanks in advance.

800.1PRICE DEPENDS ON PROCEDURES PERFORMEDONESVC::BUCCIERITue Apr 27 1993 16:3529
    Hi,

I have been going to Littleton Animal Hospital for five years with my
birds and I am very pleased with them. I specify Dr. Kilgore, she has
a way with birds that tends to calm them during the exam.

They will check the bird's weight, feather condition, beak, eyes,
feet and throat visually. This is usually done in front of you as
well as feeling for any abnormal growths. They will take a fecal
sample and have it tested for a number of diseases. It is advisable
to have newpaper or similar material on the bottom of the cage or
carrier that you will use to transport the bird for the visit. The
results of the fecal test will be available on the following day.

If the bird needs beak or nail trimming or wing clipping that will
be done by a technician in a different area. This is done to prevent
undue stress of the owner having to watch the procedure.

The price can range from $20.00 to $70.00 depending on the number of
procedures that is done. You may want to be prepared to answer
questions relative to diet and behavior. Don't be shy about asking
how much a test or procedure will cost.

They are wonderful people and I am sure that you will have a pleasant
visit. Give my regards to Dr. Kilgore.

    Regards,

I second the vote for Dr. Kilgore.

They should be able to give prices fo procedures when you call. I
believe they recommend yearly exams. They also will give dietary
recommendations, depending on what you are already feeding and the
    bird's condition and weight.

Make sure you are on time or a bit early -- the receptionist can get
testy if you are a few minutes late. Also, if it is your first visit,
they will have you fill out a very detailed form about your bird.

Dr. Kilgore was great. She handled my bird with expertise and care,
asked probing questions on his care, and had a thorough knowledge of
    avian care.

He came away from an excellent bill of health and I went away with only
$62 less in my pocket. I'm very pleased.
