544.0. "broken beak on a budgie" by SEDSWS::WITHALL (THE HERO) Thu May 02 1991 10:56

Please can someone give me some advice on a beak problem ?.
I have a Budgie that has a well and truly twisted beak , he can
eat normally from seed trays etc but cannot get his face around
treats bonded to sticks and things suchlike. The normal orange
keratin coating is missing bar a tiny bit just under the cere
. The bird was like this when I bought it , its bite was firm enough
and it looked very healthy bar that , the beak has not got anyworse
but is growing longer and i'm sure that if this could be filed/trimmed
the bird would appreciate the effort.

If this is possible which I'm sure it is - could I do this myself and
how would I go about it ?

many thanks Gary Withall ***** new noter ****

    Gary,

Welcome to the notes file. You didn't way where you are located, but
in any event the answer to your question is yes, beak trimming is a
common grooming event. I would suggest however, that you invest the
money and bring the bird to the vet. The bird should have an
examination and they will do what they can to correct the beak problem.
Unless you are experienced with birds, I wouldn't reccommend trying to
file the beak on your own. Tell us more about your Budgie when you
    get a chance. Good Luck!
