881.0. "cockatiel seizures???" by MTWASH::BURGESS () Tue Oct 04 1994 09:59

    Has anyone had a cockatiel that had seizure-like fits in the cage
    during the day?? They are like the night frights that cockatiels get
    when they flap around the cage at night when they get spooked, only
    they are during the day and he is almost paralyzed on his left side
    during it...his claw goes totally limp........my guess is he may have a
    brain tumor..... any help???

    Nobody has any information on this subject?? I know my cockatiel can't
    be the only one to ever have this....I was hoping to get a little info
    BEFORE I go to the vets... Thank you in advance...
                                                                 Mary
881.2See the Vet (ASAP)SWAM1::DEFRANCO_JEThu Oct 13 1994 14:3824
    I've never heard of a problem like you're having with your cockatiel
    but then again I'm no expert! I does sound like it could be serious
    and I would take the bird to a good vet ASAP. As I said, I'm no expert
    but I have learned a few things in dealing with illness with my own
    birds;

    1. Don't wait. Get the bird to a vet ASAP. Birds hide/mask their
        illness. By the time WE notice the bird is sick, it is usually very
        sick.

    2. Illness in birds can be quite difficult to diagnose. You may
        never know what the cause of this problem is.

    3. Treating sick birds can be expensive. And, the longer you wait,
        the sicker the bird, the more it costs.

    I haven't read much, if anything, in this conference about paralysis or
    brain tumors. These areas are certainly beyond my ability to deal
    with. I think a trip to the vet is in order.

    Regards,

    Thanks Jeanne....
                   I DO know how birds mask their problems and I am ALWAYS
    right on top of things with them...I know the minute something isn't
    normal for them.....anyone else would've simply thought that he was
    falling off him perch due to clumsiness but I noticed the limpness in
    his foot and the difference in his crying.....sounds silly but I know
    when they are even depressed or scared or if something is wrong in the
    apt.....like if a picture fell or anything unusual...like if
    maintainence was in the apt....they act differently.......I will be
    taking him to the vets but I wanted to monitor it a few times to give
    the vet more information when I go......thanks again....mary

    How's your bird doing? Was the vet able to diagnose him? Hope all is
    well!
