654.0. "Classic Cuts!" by SALSA::DEFRANCO () Thu Jan 23 1992 18:31

I've called a few bird breeders in town asking for help with wing
clipping and it seems most people here in Tucson do the old "cut
everything off" routine. There must different styles or cuts that one
can do so that the bird still looks good, but can't fly off.

My Taco loves to fly so I don't want him to sink like a rock as he
surely would with all primaries cut off. I would like him to just be
able to float a little as he's going down. You know what I mean??

If any one has "cut configurations" that would suit my desires I would
be greatful if you could share them with me.

    Thanks,

    Jeanne

    Hi Jeanne,

I also don't like my birds being ROCKS. I just generally use my
judgement and cut only as many feathers as needed, starting with the
end of the wing and working in. This may not be the "prettiest" cut,
but you don't risk the birds breaking thier long feathers, as you do
when you leave a couple on the end.

654.2The one wing cut...AVIAN::KIRSCHBAUMOn Wings of Fiberglas and SteelFri Jan 24 1992 13:309
I leave 2 feathers on the end of one wing, and
	cut the rest...

I leave the second wing whole.

Seems to have worked on my blue and gold

654.3Need more help pleaseSALSA::DEFRANCOMon Jan 27 1992 15:1616
Thanks for your suggestions. I have another question now. After
speaking with the woman that I purchased Taco from my husband decided
it was best to have him completely clipped so he could do WHAT SHE
DOES, which is to let her birds out on a T-stand on the open patio
    during good weather.

I don't know if I like this idea. Our yard is walled in and our patio
has a roof but I'm still afraid of doing this. Of course this would
never be done without our supervision and we do live on a very quiet
    street.

    What do you all think!!!

654.4A ferrett leash worksAVIAN::KIRSCHBAUMOn Wings of Fiberglas and SteelMon Jan 27 1992 18:5623

A nylon leg leash is the key....I saw some that
pet shops sell for ferrets that would work.

I believe that one made out of chain would be
terrible. I also suspect that it would depend
	on the bird.

Avalon always "helps" me wash cars in the summer
and rake leaves in the fall. He also is a
wonderful help in the garden in the spring, thou
he likes it better during picking time, then
	planing time.

However, you have to be careful that the "leash"
does not get tangled around things. I believe
that close supervision is the thing. Even if
you were convinced that your bird would never
fly away, you would have to be aware that things
	can happen, cats, hawks etc....

My macaw can fly with a "normal" wing cut. So, she gets the ugly cut,
from the end of the wing in. Tha's not great, but she is an "excellent"
flyer.

Taco had his wings cut. The first 5 or 6 primaries were taken off.
Actually, he still looks very good and I consider the cut to be both
functional and good looking enough for me to live with. Pionus have
very short tails and wings to begin with so that's probably why I don't
    see much difference.
