921.0. "Summers is time for extra caution" by SUBSYS::MISTOVICH () Mon Jul 01 1996 16:21

With summer finally here, it's time to remember to take extra care of our birds.

Please make sure your winged companion can't get out an open window or door.
Even if they are lucky enough to find help, it may be too late. The little
budgie that adopted my vendor, Bob, on Thursday became sick on Friday, just
hours before I had an appointment for him. Despite excellent and prompt
emergency care by Dr.Sager, died Friday afternoon. The apparent cause of death
was poison, probably from drinking contaminated water.

If you should take in a stray bird, remember to keep it in strict quarantine.
Since it may have gone some time without food or water, grape or fruit punch
gatorade in place of plain water is a good first aid treatment (per Littleton
Animal Hospital). The gatorade contains vitamins, minerals, electrolytes and a
high sugar content, helping to counteract stress and replenish the body quickly.
Then get it straight to an avian hospital for examination. It may have picked up
parasites or illness from other birds. If it came into contact with a dog or
cat, even though there are no apparent injuries, it will pick up deadly saliva
bacteria when preening. Unfortunately, if it has injested something contaminated
with pesticide, insecticide, motor oil, etc. there is not much you can do.

Also be careful with cooked food, fruits, and veggies, since in the hot weather
they spoil quickly. Although I am feeding a wider variety of fresh food
(especially fruits), I'm actually cutting back on the fresh and cooked food this
year. That way, it is all eaten and finished more quickly.
