897.0. "Princess Parrots and Rock Peebles" by KOALA::DEFELICE () Mon Apr 17 1995 17:25

I have been looking a good many breeds and types of birds over the last
couple of weeks. I have also acquired a small number of books to use a
guide and reference. I actually started looking in order to purchase a
pet for a friend, but now I have become intriged with pet birds myself.

Last Friday I stopped at Wingsong Aviaries in Merrimack, NH. I got a
good deal of information from the owner about the various breeds they
sold. I was also interested in what might be best for me. In my case,
I think it might be best to buy a pair of parrakeets (i.e. small parrots).
In particular, I am seeking information in regards to Pricess Parrots.
(Princess of Wales), and Rock Peebles. Has anyone had any experience
with either of these birds from Australia?

    Thanks Again,
    Bob D.

Am I the only one who ever considered these birds?

I guess that should read Rock Peblars... I gathered that they (both
Princess and Peblars) are somewhat less vocal than African birds. I
understand that they may develop a modest vocabulary and live to be
    approx. 30 years of age.

    Bob,

These are not the most common companion birds and it may be awhile
before someone responds on information. As this is your first bird you
may want to consider something different, such as a cockatiel or
Budgie. Wingsong is well respected and knowledgeable, any question you
have can probably be answered by them.

    Good luck,
    Doug

I used to pet sit for some Rock Peblars. Nice birds. They were set up
in flights so they had each other for company. They are good size
birds because of their long tails. They would need a large cage with a
flight being best. Their song is quiet and they can become quite good
whistlers. One family did have one as a pet and he was a really nice
bird. Not too popular as they are not real flashy birds.
