862.0. "Male Flapper...." by COMET::ANTHONY_B () Wed May 25 1994 00:49

I guess by reading some of these notes that a certain amount of molting
is expected. Does that include the larger feathers too or just the
small down-like ones. I have two parakeets, one male and one female.
The mail like to grab the cage about halfway down and just flutter his
wings as fast as he make them flap. i was told that this was part of a
mating ritual.. Is this true? They are probably about a year old. If
I get a nest, what else is required? Do I need to adjust their diets?

    Hi,

    1) yes, large feathers are molted also, along with the smaller contour
       feathers

    2) the fluttering while hanging on the side of the cage is an attempt
to exercise and is normal for a healthy bird, especially a young
       one, whether clipped or not

    3) a lot of good extra food is required, plus a parakeet next _box_, not a
nest such as a finch or canary would use....look in Bird Talk or other
bird publications for sources--or call around to pet stores that
carry birds or bird supplies--sometimes farm stores have the wooden
       next boxes also

Good luck with your birds. Parakeets are usually very good parents and
are excellent for the first-time breeder. You don't even have to
hand-feed the babies...just play with them a lot when they start to
fledge and they should become tame quiet easily. Pick up a good book
on parakeets (again, look in magazines or check local stores...there
are a lot of books on parakeets out there).
