813.0. "Poisonous Plants" by ALFA1::COOK (Chips R Us) Mon Jul 26 1993 14:31

    I was plant shopping this weekend and found a really neat plant.
    It's related to the pointsettia even though it's a succulent.
    The family is Euphorbia, and it is called a pencil plant. This
    is the funniest looking plant I think I've ever seen. Kinda like
    a tree but with no leaves. In the spring it gets tiny yellow flowers.
    Anyway, I wanted to put it next to the birds but before I but one
    I want to make sure it's not poisonous. I looked it up in our
    Time Life plant books but didn't really get anywhere.

    Can anyone help?

    If it is related to the Pointsetta, it is probably poisonous. It is
    safer to consider everything poisonous unless someone reliable says
    different.

813.2one experience with a pencil plant...PEACHS::RROGERSTue Jul 27 1993 15:4212
uh, well, I sorta test tasted a pencil plant when I was a kid. If we are
talking about the same plant, when you break the "twigs" a milky liquid
comes out.

It made my throat burn (just a tiny bit of the stuff) and my parents panic :-).
They called poison control, but they had never heard of the plant. They
suggested slightly burned toast, tea, and a doctor if things did not improve.

I was fine an hour or so later but boy that burned toast was nasty!

    Yes, that's exactly the same plant. And that's why I passed it by
    also. The milky liquid from pointsettias is poisonous. But it's
    such a neat plant that I wanted to put it next to the cages for them
    to use as a jungle gym. I think we'll stick to ferns...they love to
    hide in them.

813.4Poisonous Plants (continued)STAR::WORLEYFri Jan 21 1994 19:0622

	Does anyone know off the top of their heads or where the information
	might be found as to what are a list of known poisonous plants for
	birds?

	I read note 813 but that was specific to 2 plants.

	My birds are eating my palm tree which has started growing into
	the cage, and I don't mind that so much but I thought since they
	liked it so much I would get them their own tree (big cage).
	I want to make sure I don't harm them in the process of trying
	to make them happier of course.

		Thanks,

				Tiph

 I found out this much with a quick call to my vet just now.

 Some plants that birds are "allergic" to include:

	*  poinsetta (of course)
	*  marijuana (no comment)
	*  english ivy
	* difembaccia (I hope someone knows what I mean by this spelling)

  I am going to stop by the vets office an pick up the entire list
  and maybe that will be of help to someone.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the info on plants. Dieffenbachia??? maybe...is the
    spelling (see .1). Also, if you have time, could you post the
    list you get from the vet? If it is long and don't have time
    to key it in, if you send it to me interoffice mail, I'll enter
    it for you....MKO1-2/E12.
