    Hi Steve..
              I have a Jenday Conure {pronounced(conyour)}...The jendays
are as close as you can get with out it being a Sun Conure....They are
almost identical except my bird (CASWELL) has green wings and blue tail
feathers. His head is yellow with orange around his eyes, and mostly
orange on his chest. His colors are extremely vibrant and it is a
result of PRIME vitamins. He eats regular parrot food, although I
choose to mix it with another parrot food (dry seed mix also) called
FIESTA because it has almonds, pistachios, and many other fruits and
nuts..he also eats anything I eat...favorites are mac & cheese, ice
cream, yogurt, raisins, any kind of cooked pasta, cream of wheat,
grilled cheese, you name it...he will eat it...he loves grape kool-aid,
and regular hot tea...the only things, to my knowledge, that the cannot
have are chocolate, avacados, and RAW potatoes.....
about the price....where ever you saw a sun for the amount is a great
price....usuallly they are about $500.00 which was how much mine was..
I have even seen them for $700.00.....They do have long life spans...
so to pay 500.00 for something that will be around for 25+ years isn't
too much.....I wrote more about him in the note JENDAY CONURES....
if you have any questions I would be more than glad to answer them if I
    can...... mary

    Steve,

We have a sun conure who's nearly 6 months old. Sunny's a *very* sweet
bird. Loves to cuddle, and let's us know when he isn't getting enough
attention. He does screech, but with all the noise frrm the other
birds, it doesn't really seem that loud. He loves to play in his cage,
too, and keeps himself quite amused haning upside-down and chewing
    on his toys.

We've seen them for anywhere from $375 to $799 ... ours was $500. He
was a wedding present, and we both love him. I think you'll be very
happy with a Sunny of your own. :-)

About price, last week I saw a Sun Conure for sale at a pet store for
$900. I think that is incredibly steep, but the salesclerk said that
you could get one from a breeder directly for several hundred less.

This bird was hand-fed, a year old, EXTREMELY friendly and endearing.
He wasn't afraid of people or strangers, you could easily put him on
    his back in your palm.

So I guess your price of around $600 ($US) is about right. Try
breeders vs. a pet store and you'll probably get the best deal (and the
    healthiest bird).

I have seen many sun conures and Jendays which are almost identical...
$900.00 is way too steep.....my Jenday was 499.00 at Seaworld Pet
Center in Salem N.H......although it is a pet store their birds are
both reasonably priced and extremely healthy....900.00 is ridiculous!

Has anyone been successful getting a Sun Conure to talk? I've been
considering a bird for a little while now, this would be my first, and am
having a hard time choosing between a Senegal Parrot and a Sun Conure.

From what I've read it would seem that the Senegal might talk more,
but it's still unclear, and anyway that's not the only important factor for
me. The other is noise...Conures in general can be loud, but perhaps this
wouldn't be as pronounced since it would be alone? Do Suns tend to be
more or less noisy than average, or about on par? I've looked at
three or four in a couple different stores and none have been all that
loud (haven't heard one really screech)...would they get worse as they got
    older?

Any input and/or experience would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Mark

PS The Suns are $600-$700 and the Senegals around $500 in a couple
    different stores here in Pittsburgh.
793.8GLDOA::PAGELWings on air ...Mon May 17 1993 16:5719
Our Sunny doesn't really seem to be any louder than any of the other
birds ... but maybe that's because with nearly 100 of them, it's hard
    to tell. :-)

He's about 10 months old, and said his first words last week. I really
haven't trie to teach any of the birds to talk, but I do talk to them
alot. I was feeding them and saying "Hello Chip" to one of the
cockatiles, and Sunny surprised the heck out of me by repeating
"Hello Chip." He hasn't said anything else, at least not to me, but
    does mimick my kissing noises.

I haven't got any experience with Senegals, but this is one talking
    Sunny at least.

We pick up two 2-week old suns tonight to join our brood. :-) The
more the merrier. (Then I'll be hand feeding those two and a new
    Fisher, too)

Senegals are much quieter than sun conures, but obviously quite
different in appearance as well. The $375-$900 US price is the
range here in New England right now, depending on the source, the
age, whether the bird is banded or not, just weaned or been through
several disappointed owners (who didn't know about the sun conure's
screaming). If you can find a sun conure that was raised alone,
without being near any other sun conures (or any type of conure,
for that matter), you may find the bird quieter in the long run
than one raised with it's own kind or near a lot of other conures.
My sun conures could say a few words, but were not really talkers.
I have heard the same about Senegals, but here are two people you
could talk with more on the Senegals who have a lot of experience
raising them and having them as pets: Anne Bennetter at 603/434-7382
in Londonderry, NH and Dru Desy at 508/485-4450. They both also
have some experience with different types of conures. Good luck!/LC

Just to round off this note.

Since the sad demise of Sid the cockateil a couple of weeks ago (a
heart attack or seizure, the vet couldn't find anything physically
wrong with her, I've been looking around for another bird, and
yesterday I became the owner of a hand reared Sun Conure.

I don't know what sex he/she is. Is there an easy way to tell with Sun
Conures? For now, I'll call her a she because I suppose I can't call
    her 'it' all the while!

Chewy is very active, and loves to burrow around in your clothes, and
hang upside down from almost anything! She chews almost anything (hence
the name) when out of the cage and she looks like she's got quite a
high destructive possibility, so we have to keep an eye on her, but
when she's walking around on you, she's very delicate, and likes to try
and lick off any sort of pattern on your clothes, or any moles on your
    skin!

No noise so far, expect the loud(ish) squeak when anyone comes in or
out of the room. Better than a motion detector! She's very tame, and
will allow anyone to pick her up and stroke her.

I've had her less than 24 hours so far, but it both myself and my
girlfriend are now big Chewy fans!

    I'll keep you posted!

793.12Probably too young to tell, but....CUPMK::COMPTONTue Mar 29 1994 14:3812
    Hi,

There is no sure-fire way of telling the sex of your conure without
having it undergo one of the available sexing procedures. I have
noticed that after about three years of age the males I used to have
were decidedly more red around the cheeks and chest than their mates,
but it could have been a coincidence (I had five breeding pairs).

Your vet can help you with sexing the bird, or Bird Talk magazine
advertises three different companies you can be in touch with directly.

Hello! I'm new to bird ownership (since July) and I purchased
a Sun Conure from this note file. I would love to converse with
anyone about other Sun Conures or Conures in general. Being new to
having a bird, I have lots of questions. You can write to me at

We (mostly my wife) have a breeding pair of Suns and have hand raised a
few which we've sold. We found them to be very friendly but a bit noisy at
times. I love it when the young ones lie on their back with their little legs
sticking straight up in the air when they sleep. If you aren't expecting it
it looks like they're dead.

Al

We also have a breeding pair of Jendays and a breeding pair of Mitereds. I think
Linda said the Jendays were sitting on another clutch..

793.15My Ears are still ringingWMOIS::FLECK_SThu Jan 18 1996 17:1219

    Al,
You say they sleep on their backs? One morning when I uncovered
the cage, I couldn't find Bird(yes, thats his name)and then I saw just
a tail feather sticking out from under the newspaper thats on the
floor of his cage. My heart sank, but when I opened the door he made
some noise. From then on, after lining the cage with paper I make
a tent with more paper and he loves going under there.

Sometimes the noise is a bit too much, especially when your
real, real close, and it leaves your ears ringing. It also drives
my cats and dogs crazy! Will he ever talk? He sort of says "kiss
kiss" then makes the kissing sound. And sometimes he will sound
like he's trying to say a whole sentence but I don't know what
he's saying. He's almost got "HEY" down, because thats what I
say to him when he's on one of his screaming trips! Now he
screaches twice, then tries to say HEY! They sure can be fun!

We have one African Grey whose favorite toy is an empty paper sack. She'll
run in there and scream & holler and fight with the bag and then tear it to
shreds. We haven't given the conures the chance.

of our other birds. Yes they can be a riot, but the noise at times is deafening

Our first African grey baby hatched this morning. We've had other babies,
but this is the first from our pair. My wife is on cloud nine.

Gotta run,
