778.0. "alternative therapies" by MKOTS4::MACDONALD (Toirneac Speir) Thu Mar 11 1993 13:15

    Anyone had any experiences with alternative therapies? After a week
    at the vet my budgie didn't seem to be any better and then came down
    with a cold, no doubt, after he system was weakened by the
    anti-biotics. I used Echinacea and Allium and he's better than ever.

778.1Would like more info...CSOA1::DIRRMANThu Mar 11 1993 15:415
    That sounds interesting. I would love more information on alternative
    therapies. Do you have a book - or how did you find your information.
    I have to say that have had extremely good luck with my birds and have
    been able to "doctor" any problems my self ... so far. I am always open
    to new ideas.

    i've been using homeopathic medicine for at least 10 years now, for my
    dogs, cats and myself. For me it's the only way to go so when my bird
    had a cold I figured why not for him too? There are lots of books on
    this subject available for people and I apply the same to my pets,
    adjusting the dosage for the weight. I've also been studying herbs, I
    completed an apprenticeship program over the summer and have used some
    of that info on my pets too. I've also had great success with the Bach
    Flower Remedies, especially Rescue Remedy, for stressed birds. I'm
    hoping to be able to use some of the other remedies with birds. I just
    recently became involved with Tellington Touch, a bodywork technique,
    and have used that on my Budgie too. (not too easy to do on a small
    bird :') There was an article on Homeopathic Medicine for Birds in
    the Oct. 92 issue of Cage Bird Magazine. There is also an excellent
    book on Homeopathic Treatment for Birds by Beryl M. Chapman. It lists
    lots of remedies, some common, some not so common.

    MaryAnne,

    	Thanks for the information. That sounds really interesting. I
    missed that article in Cage Bird - I will have to dig it out.

    		Thanks again!

    I just had a baby cockatiel hatch yesterday. Patty or Paddy will be
    the name. This is a first chick for this female.
