774.0. "English budgie, what are they like?" by SWAM1::DEFRANCO_JE () Wed Feb 24 1993 17:39

What is the difference (character wise) between the American and the
    English budgie?

I had two Am. Budgies and they were cute as buttons but very high
strung and difficult to tame. I do miss their antics and chortleling
and might consider an English budgie if their character is a bit more
    subtle than the American budgie.

I tend to like quiet, stable birds (like my Pionus) and would rather
stay away from nervous, flightly birds (like my old budgies) and even
like my Cockatiels. Would an English budgie more like a large parrot
or more like an American budgie or tiel?

    Thanks,

    Jeanne

P.S. The two American budgies are now breeding at a friends aviary
and don't seem to miss the human attention what so ever.

    Jeanne,

English Budgies are visually larger with a protruding forehead and
chest (like an old english gent.). Feathers usually cover a portion
of their eyes (at adulthood). Their personality is much like that of
a Pionus. Quiet and layback. They are not active birds probably due
to their stubby, heavyset bodies. They do like to chatter like that
of their american cousins, but they are so "stuffy" looking and that
I feel is their endearing quality.

Another good quality is that unlike the female american budgie, the
english budgie as a rule does not attack her babies once they leave
the nest. My american females are merciless with their babies and
I usually have to remove them a short time after they leave the box.
My english babies can stay in the flights with their mom and dad even
when a new clutch has begun.

I just love these little guys.

    re .1
    Denise,

My American budgies used to beat up on my tiels (agressive little
buggers). Would the English budgie do the same or would it be able to
live in peace with other birds.

If I get one, it would have its own cage, but I like everyone to share
"time out" of the cage (at the same time). Presently, the Pionus and
tiels don't bother much with each other when they are out of their
cages. When I had the Am budgies, my bird room was a real "ZOO".

    Thanks,

774.3BUDGIE BEHAVIORBRAT::BOURGAULTThu Feb 25 1993 16:2217
    Jeanne,

I would be willing to bet that you would have NO problem with the
English Budgie getting along with the Tiels. They are very mild
mannered and socialize very well. They do not have that typical
agressive behavior that the american has. In fact, I had to often
remove an english budgie from a mixed flight with other americans due
to the fact that the americans were picking on it....and the English
was about a third larger in size! They are just simply sweet mellow
    birds.

Once in a great while you will get one that is a bit more agressive
(almost always it will be a female), but it is not the norm.

    Hope this helps you out.

My English budgies are fine with the Lovebirds when they are all out
together. They tend to get bossed about a bit but never have any
    trouble.
