759.0. "Feather Picking" by SWAM1::DEFRANCO_JE () Wed Dec 23 1992 18:45

One of my cockateils, sunny (female) has been picking her feathers for
about 4 months now (maybe a little longer). It seems to have started
when I got a new male teil, Louie.

She and Louie seem very fond of each other as they are alway together
and preening and stuff. I've moved Sunny from one cage to another, one
room to another, played music for her, left her quiet, and so forth and
so on. She eats a good diet of pellets, rice, veggies and seed and
spend 4 to 5 hours a day out of her cage. I don't know what else to
    do.

She's been to the vet and a stool culture was taken and everything
checks out O.K. The vet suggests putting her in an aviary with Louie
and a nest box and feels the picking will stop.

I had not planned on baby birds and am not ready (financially or
emotionally) to build an aviary. Does anyone have suggestions??

    Thanks,

    Jeanne

Is she taking baths - or are you spraying her with water on a regular
basis. Sometimes this helps. They get dry skin and that causes them
to pick. I would leave the two in the same cage as long as they get
a long. The only other thing I have seen is when they are missing
some vitamin or mineral in their diet. You might want to add powdered
vitamins to the food, a mineral block and maybe some wheatgerm oil in
    the water for a bit.

    		Good Luck!

    Was she checked for mites?
759.2Yet another trip to the vetSWAM1::DEFRANCO_JETue Dec 29 1992 17:4914
What feathers Sunny has are lovely (soft and shinny) so I don't think
    Mites are the problem.

We are going to another vet on Thursday, (a real bird specialist) and
they will do some bloodwork to check for kidney/liver problems.

Sunny does take baths (via a spray bottle) but she DOES NOT LIKE them
and I run the cool air humidifyer in the bird room also.

I really think its mental/emotional but will know more by Thursday.

759.4A "little" better!SWAM1::DEFRANCO_JETue Jan 12 1993 18:2634
Well, Dr. Miller (the avian vet) thought Sunny might be suffering from
some type of infection along with dry skin. Considering she looks so
good other than the missing feathers he didn't think is was too
    serious.

He did mention Chlamidia (sp) but since Sunny (nor any of my other
birds) are showing any other signs he put that thought on the back
    burner for now.

Dr. Miller gave Sunny a shot of long acting antibiotic (10 days) and
she is indeed doing better. Not perfect, but a lot better. She is
letting the larger feathers alone and it looks like they might stand a
chance of growing in. Sunny still preens to much on her bare areas
though and the down feathers are not growing.

I called Dr. Miller today and he said to increase the humidity. I am
now covering most of her cage and running the humidifyer right into the
cage for 1/2 hour in the morning and 1/2 hour in the afternoon.

I am also trying to get more vitamin A foods into her. She does eat
Collards Greens, spinach and brocolli but forget anything orange
colored. As far as she is concerned a carrot is simply an unwanted
    intruder in her cage.

Well, hopefully the added humidity will bring good results within the
next few weeks. Only time will tell.

    Jeanne

P.S. What other foods (human or bird treats) could I give to Sunny
that would increase her vitamin A intake?

    Hi Jeanne,

My Amazon doesn't care for any of the Vitamin A stuff Sunny likes. I
bake up a big batch of carrot cake( low sugar) and freeze it. I give
him a peice every day. I got the recipe from Joy of cooking and
modified it to my liking. I cut the sugar in half and double the
    carrots.
