    	I need some Help - I have 2 shaft-tailed finches, one
was given to me, the other bought...Now I need to know
how you tell the difference between male and female?
They are beautiful birds...I'm thinking of breeding them-
my only experience on breeding is with Zebra finches..

I also would like to know more about Java Rice finches,

718.1JAVA RICE FINCHESBRAT::BOURGAULTMon Aug 10 1992 19:5225
I have Java Rice Finches and really love them. They like a wooden
nest box for breeding and just LOVE oats! I buy oats and mix them
in with their finch seed and they eat those first. They also like
corn, broccoli florets, shaved carrots and spinach leaves. I heard
that they like meal worms, but haven't ever given them those.

You can differentiate the males from females by the redness and size
of their beaks. The top by the nostrils especially. If it is a larger
bump and redder then it is a male or better yet, if you hear it singing
then it is definitely a male, for the females don't hardly make a sound
    other than an occasional peeping.

    They are really neat birds.

They are a good sized finch ( I believe they are really in the sparrow
family according to one book I read).

I don't know much about shafttail Finches but really like them.

    Hope this helps,

    Regards,
    Denise
