714.0. "I AM BACK AGAIN!" by MILPND::SIPILA (Can I go home now?) Tue Aug 04 1992 17:50

Well, I am back again looking at conures. This time a Sun Conure at
the same pet store. $454.00 is the asking price. She is very
brilliant in color - ~ 4 months old and has had cosmetic surgery on her eye
because one of her nest mates injured it in a tiff. The vision was not
    impaired.

Do all conures have the same characteristics that I have read about in
the Pet_Birds file? I know she is a screamer, as she screamed to me
when I went into the store today but stopped when I made of her. She likes
    peanuts and loves to bathe!

Do the males learn to talk better than the females?

    Thanks for your advice.

    Regards,

    Susan

714.1Suns do scream!DECLNE::TOWLEWed Aug 05 1992 23:536
I've had a Sun for about 6 years. He screams when he sees squirrels
outside, or when he just wants attention. He screams when he hears my
car drive into the garage too, or when someone comes into the room if
nobody has been there for some period of time. He also loves raw
peanuts. I give him two per day, as I don't want him a 'Fat-so'! We
can say "What's Up?" and can Wolf-whistle etc. He's neat!!

We also have a Sun Conure. Make no mistake about it, they do scream.
Other possible negatives: - they chew: Moldings, furniture, anything.
I cannot let the bird near me unitl I have removed my watch and any
pens or pencils or other things he can get a hold of. We have an extra
room in the house (the oldest has move on) which is functions as a
bird room. They are free in the room. Once my mother-in-law, fell
asleep in the room and they had unsnapped her dress (down the front)
and the only reason she woke up was, they were attacking her earrings.
They = Gingie (Sun Conure) and Abbie (a teil).

The Sun conure has also attacked the dogs and a couple of guest ( in
the room). Don't really know why since other times she will ignore
the dogs and will get along fine with other guests.

Sun Conures by nature also nip (bite). This behavior is not vicious
or confrontational, it is the way they are ( other types of parrots
    do this as well).

Sun Conures in the wild nest in cavities. This trait I have seen in
Gingie when she will find a confined spot to rest ( including inside
my shirt) This combined with the nipping has lead her to pick up
the phrase -- STOP IT, which she now says immediately after nipping me.

I hope this information doesn't change your mind. They are very nice
(beautiful) birds with intelligence and playfullness not found in
    other species.

    Good Luck.
