661.0. "UNRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES!" by AIRG::TINA () Mon Feb 10 1992 12:31

did you ever feel like entering something like this in the for sale
    section?

"due to unreconcilable differences, i have no alternative but to put up
    for sale:

one 27 year old human male, clean, and good eater (bro)"

has anyone ever felt like they have to pick between their significant
other and their bird? chewy and my husband are constantly at odds!

Well not quite to that extent -- but --

I bought Cassie (gray Cockatiel) for my wife for Christmas. Cassie is
from a private breeder, one in this notes file in fact, and was hand
fed. When he came home he was just about six weeks old. At that time he
would come to me, my wife, and sometimes, even my daughter. Lately
though, like only in the last four weeks or so he ABSOLUTELY refuses to
come to me under any circumstances and will only go to my daughter when
she offers to take him out of the cage.

He will talk to me and will accept treats from me, we discovered he
likes chowmein noodles, and lets me put stuff in or out of the cage but
when I try to get him to come to me he goes to mamma and if she is
holding him and I reach over he goes totally tappy. I mean screams and
bites and kicks and yells no.

OH well, I got Cassie for my wife so I am thrilled that they have
bonded so well. He rides her head around the house and will sit on her
shoulder or the back of her chair watching her crochet and plays
peek-a-boo for hours. We compromise - we talk when he is on the other
side of the room from me - I don't try to touch him and he does'nt bite
    or cuss at me.

661.2Sad good-bye'sGRANPA::KBARRETTFri Feb 14 1992 19:5011
I can totally relate. I will probably be selling my Alex (Afrigan
Grey) My fiance' and Alex are at total odds, and it has caused one to many
fights between us already. I love Alex, but he just doesn't want to
give up his bad habits of screaming and yelling. Something that gets
on my nerves, but I can overlook because of the love I have for him.
But I don't know how much longer I'll be able to subject my future
husband to this. I had written a note earlier in the year asking for
suggestions to this behavior, but it looks like Alex is set in his
    ways. We'll see.

    Good luck
661.3Fickle! now he likes my hubby more than ME!AIRG::TINAMon Feb 17 1992 11:3318

Don't believe it! they aren't always set in their ways.
For the past couple of weeks, chewy is preferring my hubby over ME!
    They are so darn fickle.

If i try to figure out what Corey did differently...i couldn't tell
you. Chewy just decided to like him -- for a while...

You know, when Chewy starts on one of his screaming fits, I put a
blanket over his cage, say night-night, and put on classical music.
Most importantly though when he screams, i DON'T go to him.
If you go to him when he screams, he is getting the behavior from
you that he wants -- going to see him.

have you tried this type of behavioral modification? if not, you
may want to consider it. (it has worked with my fickle bird.)

661.4Isn't that cute!?!?CSOA1::DIRRMANMon Feb 17 1992 13:1413
Yep - they are fickle! I think that is how we ended up with so many
birds! As for the screeming - we do the same with our Blue Crowned
Conure. When he screems - I put him back in the cage and cover him up.
And very quietly tell him time for quiet. He Usually quiets down in
about 5 minutes. I will leave hime for 15 to 30 minutes and then
uncover him. He is totaly bonded to my husband and would just as soon
take off my hand - even though I clean and feed him. That is just the
way they are. Take you fiance to the pet store and let him pick out a
bird - like I said - that is how we ended up with so many (7 + 4 chicks).

    		Good Luck!
