659.2 | Another one and More info. | CSOA1::DIRRMAN | | Mon Feb 17 1992 13:28 | 15 |
| On Friday the parents stopped sitting on the eggs and just took to
feeding the 3 babies. The following Wednesday - the fourth chick was
hatched. Evidently - the three chicks kept the eggs warm enough to
hatch. All four are doing beautifully! The parents are female cinnamon
and male Lutino. The first born is a Cinnamon and the next two are
Lutino. I don't know what the fourth is as it is still yellow fuzz.
The fith egg was not fertile so finally threw it out. I really tried to
keep out of the box and let them alone.
I have them on fortified seed, a home made rice mixture, millet, and
two slices of wheat bread a day.
The first chick is two weeks old today so I will start to handle him
so that he begins to get used to humans.

659.3 | Grey - Male or Female ??? | CSOA1::DIRRMAN | | Tue Feb 18 1992 14:31 | 6 |
| Well - the first born is a grey - not a cinnamon - so the male is split
to grey. So - what sex does that make it. I know all the lutinos would
be female and the cinnamons would be male - but what is the grey??? I
am soooo confussed! I will have to wait as to the what the others are
as a cinnamon also has red eyes when born. The are so cute and still
doing ok. They hissss real well now!

659.4 | More info. | CSOA1::DIRRMAN | | Mon Feb 24 1992 16:15 | 13 |
| Just to keep you all updated - the four babies are doing splendidly! I
picked up some Petamine to add to the parents food as they are really
working hard to keep the babies fed. I am feeding them the rice mixture
twice a day now which seems to help some. They have two sources of
water - one to bath (or whatever) and their regular water cup. Both
are used quite a bit!
I hope this helps someone else that may go through the
breeding/hatching process for the first time. It really is quite an
experience and nothing like raising Chickens (used to do that long
ago).

659.5 | Genes and Relatives | CSOA1::DIRRMAN | | Tue Feb 25 1992 13:27 | 9 |
| Last night I dug out the Book on genes and Cockatiels and from what
I gather - the Lutinos will be female and the greys will be male
split/Lutino/Cinnamon. I am trying to make up a chart to see what will
happen when I breed the males to what. This could get interesting. The
book mentioned breeding back with the parent. Does anyone know what
breeding combinations among "relatives" are ok and Not ok?? Out of the
4 books on Tiels - none were very specific.
Thanks in advance --

659.6 | Another Family on the way! | CSOA1::DIRRMAN | | Tue Mar 17 1992 11:19 | 21 |
| Further update - All four babies are doing really well. The first born
Lutino is absolutely gorgeous! The second born is a grey and very even
tempered. The third born is Lutino and we have named her Patches. Dad
picked on her a bit and her feathers on her wings are coming in slowly.
The forth born is a gorgeous grey with a great deal of yellow (we call
him M.B. - miracle baby).
They are all in their own cage now and eating up a storm. They are
really adjusting well! The first two are for sale - actually one is
sold already. The last two I am keeping for breeding. The are all
tame and really a lot of fun already! It is so neat to see all four
different personalities develope. They are down to one had feeding a
day now.
Mom and Dad have already started another family. There are two eggs.
After this next brood I will take the box out before they can get
started again. Two broods are enough for a year.
I will keep you all posted on the next family.
