647.0. "Question!" by WMOIS::SUNDBLOM_L () Thu Jan 09 1992 16:59

    We bought our tiel 2 weeks before Christmas and we both are enjoying
    him a lot. When I bought the bird I also got all the acessories. The
    question I have is ...why does he not use his cuddle bone?

    Maybe he just needs time? Other than that he sings and chirps a lot
    and rides on our shoulders all around the apartment.

    You could try getting him a black sandstone and see if he prefers that.
    They do need to keep their beaks down one way or the other. Keep the
    cuttlebone in there, and add a sandstone. He'll catch on eventually!

647.2CUDDLEBONES, etc.BRAT::BOURGAULTTue Jan 14 1992 18:3013
    Give him some time. I have found that birds react differently to
    cuddlebones and mineral blocks. Sometimes a bird will attack the
    cuddlebone immediately and not let up until it is just powder, other
    times they hardly touch it for a year or more. It is there for them
    if they need it. You may find your bird will finally start using it
    after 6 months or more. As for keeping their beaks in tact, the
    cuddlebone is primarily for added calcium, not for their beaks. Your
    bird will keep his beak trim simply by cracking seed and climbing the
    bars of his cage and with toys. Few birds need to have their beaks
    trimmed, and the ones that do are usually elderly.

    Good luck!

647.3Safe but these Birds aren't Rocket Scientists!MYGUY::LANDINGHAMMrs. KipWed Feb 05 1992 00:4111
    I just found (at Pet Supply Depot) these gigantuan looking round
    "avian" cuddebone doo-hickies. It attaches to the edge of the cage in
    a much neater fashion than most of then and as many of you know, I'm
    very leery of some of the chintzy (read, DANGEROUS) metals they use for
    attaching these things. Anyway, I bought one because it is so large, I
    figured the risk was much less. Now my cockies think it's to perch on!

    Sigh *-}

    Since this topic's titled QUESTION, I'll ask one! :^)

    A friend was describing a pet bird, but he didn't know what it was.
    He said it's a little smaller than a parrot, has a long blue tale,
    green wings, and I believe he said blue patches on the face and red on
    the chest. It sounded to me like he was describing a parrot, but he
    said it does not have a hooked bill. It has a regular bill like a
    robin. Any ideas of what this might be??
