Hi Susan,
I have 2 cockatiels and a Nanday conure. My Nanday (Bandit) is so
wonderful and sweet. I got him as a handfed baby about a year ago and
have never regretted it. He's so wonderfully affectionate, and funny!
They do have the potential to make **TONS** of noise, so if you're
sensitive to their screaming, I'd give it a second thought.
Mine is the boss of the house. What he wants goes, when he wants to be
held, he hangs off the side of his cage door and looks right into your
eyes and screams until you pick him up! If you're in the other room
talking on the phone and he knows you're not paying attention to him,
he insits that he become part of the excitement.
He used to be friendly to everyone and would never bite, but since I
got married and moved out of my mom's house, he's only used to being
with my husband and myself so he's becoming possesive and starting to
bite if we have company.
I wouldn't trade him for the world! I only worry about the day that
children come into my life and Bandit has to make room for baby!
Oh, about the money...you can ususally find a Nanday from Dr. Pet or
something for $50 but they look very hostile and unfriendly and I
believe are adult wild-caught birds. If you are interested in a
hand-fed baby, you have to decide if the cost of the bird is worth the
many rewards (and possible aggrevations) you may have to endure.
For what it's worth, I paid $350 for Bandit a year ago at a pet store.
With the economy the way it is, you might try to talk the owner down
in price or ask them to give you a huge discount on a cage or
something. $400+ sounds kinda high to me. I know that other breeds of
conures cost much more than nandays do, so in that sense, Nanday's are
fairly inexpensive.
I hope that helped!
Good luck,
Donna

$300.00 plus for a Nandy? Holy.....! I paid $50.00 apiece for my
breeder pair. Prices around Colorado Springs are in the $50.00 to
$100.00 range. I'm not sure that would be for hand-raised though.
I currently have two 1yr olds that I would love to find homes for
but unfortunately neither are hand-raised. Becuase of this they are
very shy and would take some work to settle them down.
There is little in print about the Nandays other then what you
find in magazines such as Bird Talk. Most conure books don't give much
space to the Nanday.
They can be a noisey bird at times, depending on temperment and the
attention factor, (like most conures). They can also be a very loving
friend and companion. I would not trust them around smaller birds. I
have lost some lovebirds to my Nanday parents, when the lovebirds
escaped and got into the Nanday cage. I make it a point never to leave
a small bird around any larger bird unless he or she is very protected.
Although my favorite is the African Grey, I think Nandays make great
pets.
If you write to Bird Talk, they might be able to point you to some
back issue articles and possibly even sell you reprints of those
articles.
Good Luck!
