597.0. "Dream come true (PIONUS)" by SALSA::DEFRANCO () Tue Sep 03 1991 18:38

    This is a dream come true!! I finally have my baby Pionus! I had
    originally wanted a blue head but after talking with several breeders I
    decided to go with a white cap. We named him/her Taco.

    I got my new baby on Saturday and he/she is doing just great. We are
    still hand feeding as Taco is only 11 weeks old and still "very" much a
    baby indeed.

    Taco is quite friendly and loves to cuddle. Of course he has this
    awful baby squawk but it settles down when I pet his head and hold him
    close to me. He loves to be OUT of his cage and wants to be with/on us
    all the time.

    This is just great, a real parrot! I never thought my
    husband would agree to this but now that he has you should see him.
    He's spoiling Taco more than I am. He's already made him a climbing
    tree and T-stand!

    Taco is very pretty. He is mostly dark olive green tinged with bronze
    and blue. His wings are a deep teal blue and his chest is light olive
    scalloped with a darker olive. He also has a hint of pink on his
    chest. Vent area is white with a few bright red feathers. His head is
    still dark colored and it will take a few years for the white feathers
    to come in. His beak is yellow.

    Thanks for sharing my happiness!!

    Congratulations Jeanne,

    I am sure your Taco will be pleasure to you. It is nice to see you took
    the time to ask a lot of questions and do a lot of research, before
    your purchase. I did similiar in that I had Budgies and looked around
    for 2 years before getting my Amazon(Joker).

597.3SPECIAL INDEED!ABACUS::BOURGAULTThu Sep 05 1991 15:1712
    Congrats Jeanne!

    You got a nice little bird! I just purchased one myself (Maximillion)
    Although he is not a hand fed baby, he is so lovable! They are quite
    easy to tame - even the imports.

    Keep us updated on his project. You have made a wise choice!

    Best of luck!

597.4Update on TacoSALSA::DEFRANCOFri Oct 04 1991 17:4825
    Update on baby Taco

    Well, Taco is now 15 weeks old and almost weaned. We are down to one
    feeding in the evening which he is now loosing interest in. He loves
    his pellets and fresh veggies. Not to crazy about fruit but just
    adores carrots. His beak and feet are always stained orange.

    He is now loosing his baby squawk (thank goodness) and is turning out
    to be a very quiet bird. Just makes little grunts and moans now and
    then. I've noticed that he is paying more attention to me when I talk
    to him now and he loves to hear whistles. He may end up being more of
    a whistler than a talker (that's OK with me)

    Taco loves to play "cuddles". I scratch his head, neck and face while
    he nibbles on my fingers and make "ahhhh" noises. He's sooooo cute.

    From what I have seen, I would highly recommend a Pionus for a pet.
    I'm glad I took the time to learn about them and I'm glad to know that
    they are gaining popularity. Please excuse by bias, but I suppose
    that's what proud moms do best!

    Denise, how is your Maximillion doing?

597.5Difference??DNEAST::CHIMERA_DONThu Oct 10 1991 16:492
    Hi Jeanne, I am curious as to the reasons that made you decide on the
    white-fronted rather than the blue_head?

	Can anyone supply a phonetic spelling of Pionus?

	Thanks
597.7Differences were very slight.SALSA::DEFRANCOTue Oct 15 1991 17:5825
    re .5

    After speaking with several breeders, it seemed the general concensus
    was that all the Pionus were wonderful, gentle, quiet birds but that
    the blue head was most prone to being overly shy. Also, it seemed that
    most breeders described their white caps as being clownish and more
    active than some of the other varieties.

    All in all, I wanted a quiet bird but then again I did want it to have
    "some" life and silly attitude about it. So far I'm pleased with the
    white cap.

    All of the differences I've described are subtle and if you prefered
    the look of a blue head over a white cap, I would certainly go with the
    blue head and not feel short changed in any way.

    Jeanne

    P.S. I saw a young blue head for sale at the bird show in Tucson last
    week and she was just beautiful!!!! It made me have second thoughts! Also
    saw a "dusky" Pionus and he was equally as gorgeous.

    I must admit though, of all the Pionus that I saw at the show, the
    white caps where the most active (playing, eating, etc..)
