I have a Red-Loried Amazon (Fergus). Fergus is aprox . 7 years and 8
months old. I say aprox. because he was brought from Quarantine as a
tiny baby to a local pet shop where I purchased him when he was aprox.
4 months old. Fergus and I are closely bonded together. He has begun
attempting to share his food with me after eating and he will not let
anyone else get near him if I happen to be around. But.....
Fergus has begun screaming continuously when I am not holding him.
This started this spring and it is driving my husband crazy. I have
tried paying him more attention but this has not helped. I try to only
go and get him when he is not screaming because I don't
want to reward this behavior. It's sometimes hard to do this when my
husband is saying:
"Shut that bird up." Covering the cage does no good. He thinks I'm
giving him attention then walking away.
I have gotten suggestions from some people that maybe he wants to mate
and I should get
him a mate. But one friend, who breeds African Greys, says that then
we would just have 2 screaming Amazons.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the mate idea or any other
suggestions?
I don't want to sell Fergus and my husband is not asking me to at this
point.
He just would like a little more relief from the noise.
Also, if I get Fergus a mate, will he be as friendly to me at least
part of the time?

Hi Doug,
Thanks very much for the pointers.
I guess what I mainly wanted to know was whether anyone had any
thoughts or experience with getting a mate
for a screamer which would help quiet him down.
The notes you suggested gave me some other ideas to try but I did not
see anything in them about
whether getting a mate would help.

Hi,
We got a mate for our orange-winged Amazon, who was the screamer of the
two as it turned out, but once they were set up with a nest box and
moved to the breeder room instead of our public bird room, the noise
making has dropped off dramatically. We also put them in a cage that
is wire mesh, 4' long by 3' high by 2' deep, instead of their Jock
cage that was spacious but nothing compared to their new home. Do
you have a separate area of your house that you could devote to trying
to breed red-loreds? I have one we just got that I am looking for a
mate for....the bird will be sexed sometime this month. It is supposed
to be difficult to breed red-loreds, so if more of us at least try,
maybe their will be more successes over time!! ;')
