532.0. "Prices for Nekton-S" by TOOHOT::SREMILLARD () Tue Apr 16 1991 18:39

I am going to purchase a 'Tiel in the next few months and I have
    	a question..

Does anyone use the hanging type "Bird Cage Defender" (they
are to protect against mites and lice. Do 'Tiels usually have
mites and lice? Even if they are kept in your home?

Perhaps I would expect some when bringing home my new baby from
the breeder... but wouldn't be able to get rid of them if they
    	are apparently on the bird?

Would a spray be better to use?

Also, what is a good price for Nekton products?

I can purchase Nekton-S (catalog) for:

    	35gm	$4.79
    	75gm 6.59
    	150gm	10.49

I am not very good with "grams" I am not sure of my actual amounts
that I would be buying. (35gm - one ounce??)

Are there any other vitamins I should consider?

    	I would appreciate comments.. Thanks

    28 grams to the ounce.

The guys at Misty Haven bird farm recommended Nekton-S for our birds,
along with a well balanced diet. We pay about $10 and change for
the 150 gram size, so it sounds to me the catalog price is no bargain,
and you probably need to pay a shipping & handling fee as well.

I have always stayed away from those bird protector things. I have
twelve birds including two cockatiels and never had a mite or lice
problem. Cleanliness is the key. I break down the cages weekly to
clean and dis-infect them. I also change food and water daily as well
as remove any soft foods that may have not been consumed that day.
The danger with these bird defender things is that they can be a health
hazard if your bird should get to it. I realize that they are hung
outside of the cage but hookbills will surprise you. They are very
capable of getting to stuff like that.

Check the ad section in Bird Talk magazine. There are a number of
catalogue mail order houses that have excellent prices for Nekton S.
The large size bottle that is sold for $15.49 at Errikson Grain in
Acton is only $10.00 from these mail order houses. I think that is the
2.25gm size. I also use Prime on the soft foods that I feed my birds.
I also mix Petamine into their seed when I feed it to them. I haven't
had a sick bird in some time and they have all been in good feather
    as well.

    I hope this helps.

From what I understand the "defender" is nothing more than a moth-ball
in a can. If you cover you tiel as most recomend, the vapors will
concentrate under the cover and could be dangerous to your bird.

When I got my Amazon, I was given a bottle of Nekton. That was 6 months
ago and I still have the same bottle. I think it is the 35 grams. I
have only a small hole in the foil top and shake a little into his
water each day. Am I doing something wrong ? If not, Where a 35 gram
bottle lasts so long, I would probably never buy anything bigger.

Thanks for all the replies! I really do appreciate it. I have
ALWAYS wanted _a_bird_ and have never had one. For some reason
if there is a person that a bird will bite... it will be me. I
just don't know why. I even talked with a person that owned a
Cockatoo that loved everybody. He HISSED at me!! Geesh, talk
    	about a complex..... heh-heh-heh...

Altho... I must admit what helped make up my mind to get a bird
was a few weeks ago I was in a shop and they had hand-fed babies.
The guy told me that I could let a baby Sun Conure sit on my
finger. I placed my hand near him and he hopped right on! I
was sooooo thrilled!!! I had a bird on my hand and I WASN'T
BLEEDING!!!!! YAHooo! I didn't try to pet him tho.. I didn't
want to spoil the moment. heh-heh-heh..

Thanks for the replies on the "Defender". My "gut-feel" was that
I didn't like it - but I am not really familiar with them.

I will continue to shop for better Nekton price.. Thanks Again!
