517.0. "Pacheco's Vaccine" by AVIAN::KIRSCHBAUM (Have You Hugged a Parrot Today) Fri Mar 15 1991 13:29

	Last nite I took Avalon to the the Vet for his annual checkup, and
	wing clip. When Pat Walz was in Boston visiting, she called him
	Sky King....

	anyway...

	The Vet (Brian Holub) recommended that I start Avalon on the new
	(1 year on the market) Pacheco's Disease Vaccine. He said that it
	was not crucial with Av, since he did not attend Bird Shows.

	We do, but I leave the Macaw at home....

	Brian said that he had administered over 300 doses of the vaccine
	without any ill effects, and the literature had reported excellent
	results in stopping an always fatal disease.

	For the first year, you need to have two shots, the initial and
	the second within 6 to 8 weeks, after that it is only one shot a
	year...

	Avalon suffered thru the whole procedure very well, bit no one and
	only screamed his protest once. I on the other hand, didn't do
	nearly as well, thou I also bit no one...

517.1Pachecco's and Leg LeashesWR2FOR::BONAZZOLI_MAFri Apr 12 1991 20:0018
    Dick,

    Hi! I haven't been on notes for a while, but I moved to California from
    Massachusetts, and own a Congo African Grey and a B & G Macaw
    (Chiquita). I have had both birds vaccinated for Pachecco's, as I was
    concerned that I could pick up something in a pet store, vet, etc, even
    though I don't take my birds with me to shows, etc. Neither or them
    has suffered any adverse affects from the vaccines, and I would
    recommend them, if only for peace of mind.

    In one of the prior notes files, you mentioned a lease for Av. Were you
    referring to a leg chain? If not, what type of leash is it? I also take
    Chiquita outside occassionally, and keep his wings clipped, but I know
    what you mean about them growing back fast. I'd be interested to hear
    more about that...

517.2Leg Leashes...LESCOM::KIRSCHBAUMHave You Hugged a Parrot TodayTue Apr 16 1991 14:3313
	I use a soft nylon Ferret Leash when I take Avalon out for walks....
	I believe that a metal chain could hurt his leg...since every now
	and again, he will get excited about something, and he is about
	2 feet in the air before I realize anything has happened.

	Since one wing is clipped, this means, he is headed for the ground.

	I am completely convinced that Av would NEVER fly away from me, but
	I am also convinced, that if he got a coupla hundred feet in the
	air, he might well get confused and lost...
