502.0. "gray cheek info anyone?" by ALCTRZ::MAPPES_DO () Wed Feb 20 1991 17:59

    Hi,
Well for Valentines day I recieved a Gray Cheek.
Does anyone have any information on them? He/She seems
    like a one person bird.

    Thanks
Donna (that makes a total of 8 birds.)

    Donne,

Congratulations on your newest addition. These little guys are just so
cute (and demanding!). Please see note 138, especially the last few
replies, for more info on grey cheeked parakeets.

My best friend had one she hand raised herself. I helped her out
alot and so did her younger sister who is 13. Anyway, that bird
turned nasty to everyone but my friend. To the point of flying
out of her cage and directly to the stranger in the room whom it
then proceeded to bite viciously. Myself, her sister and her mother
spent time in the emergency room getting shots and/or stitched up
because of that bird. When the bird walked from my friend to her
little sister and bit her face the bird was given away the next
day. These are definately one person birds no matter how nice everyone
else is to them. That is just my opinion of course.

502.3Please don't bite me!ALCTRZ::MAPPES_DOThu Feb 21 1991 15:0922
Thank you for the information! This bird is a challenge. It Loves
men but hates me with a passion. One of my husbands friends walked
in and pulled Sammy right out of his cage with no problems, he is
male. I would like to know how our feathered friends know the
difference between a man and a woman?
He tries to bite me any chance he gets. He does draw blood, ooouch!
Sammy was on top of his cage and lunged at me, going for
my face, I saw it and stepped back in turn the bird missed me. I
thought that I had made Sammy mad by giving him a shower. Sammy
has also bit my neck and given me a birdie hickey try to explain
    that to your So. :}
So much for MY Valentines gift. We might have to give this bird back
to my sister-in-laws pet shop I can't even feed the bird he attacks
my hands. I did notice that if I put a towel over my hands I can pull
Sammy out of his cage and play with him but he must be in the mood to
tolerate me. I plan to keep trying for awhile longer.

Birds, you just have to love em!

    Hi,
We have 10 birds, two of which are Graycheeks. They are adorable, can be
loud at times, and love to cuddle. At first, I didn't think they were
going to like me very well either, but I think if you keep working with
them, they will be o.k.I have had a few bumps on my lips where I have
tried to kiss them.....their beaks are sharp! They both love to cuddle
on the back of my neck under my hair.I can kiss them now and not get
bitten. One of them likes to lay on his back in my hand while I rub the
front of him and they both like to have their heads patted. They are a
lot of fun and they love attention. Both of ours are loveable, but one
of them is a little more loveable than the other one. Good luck...just
    be patient.

Well we gave Sammy back to my sister-in-law he really was not
adjusting to our home at all. My sister-in-law brought one of the
gray cheek babies to our house Sunday and by Sunday night we named
the baby Sweet Pea. The new bird is an absolute love and My nephew
told his mom that he wanted Sammy all along so that made me feel
good that Sammy got a Good home also.

    Hi Donna,

Nice to here a happy ending to the story! I wish more people would be
like you, looking for a happy solution close by, rather than giving
the bird to a pet store to sell for them.....an uncertain future
at best. And, yes, I know that sometimes that is the *only*
alternative...I just wish it didn't have to happen so often.
