Hi...
I'm looking for help in choosing what kind of bird would be right for me.
I would like a playful bird that I can cuddle with and be physical with.
I would also like as quiet a bird as possible in deference to my neighboors.
I live in an medium sized two-bedroom basement apartment. I can devote
roughly 5 cubic feet of space in my living room to the bird. My apartment
is cool to cold and fairly moist all year round. I run space heaters and
dehumidifiers for my own comfort. The bird would be exposed to about 15
to twenty different people on a fairly regular basis. I own a highly
rambunctious cat.
Any suggestions on what kind of bird would be suited to this environment?

Andy,
I have a cat and 7 birds. I put my cat outdoors during the day
I never leave my cat alone with my birds at anytime! You need
to take that in to consideration. Does the weather in your area
let you leave your cat outdoors all year around or do you
have a place that she will be happy in during the winter?
If I had it to do all over again I might not have mixed birds and
cat's they are a challenge but now they are both in my heart.
My cat has learned what birds are mommys birds and what are outside
birds. She does chase birds outside and for the most part she leaves
our pets alone. (she would love a chance at my canary)
So please think real hard the mix will keep you on your toes.
Where does your cat sleep at night? Mine sleeps on our bed. Will
your cat wonder at night maybe attack your birds mine did at first.
In the begining we had to lock the birds up at night which ment
moving cages into a seperate room at night and moving them back
in the morning. A squirt bottle slowly broke her of that habit but
it took about a good 4 months. I also had the birds first and the
cat adopted us. Well sorry to run on so long I hope this helps.

I believe you may be related to the ever famous Lila and Dick?
If so, is a blue and gold a consideration?
Cats usually avoid another animal larger than themselves. You
want a formidable species so that you can play rough (and yet
loves to cuddle). The coolness of your apartment is not a
consideration, since birds adapt nicely to lower temperatures
as long as they do not fluctuate. Also, since they come from
a rain forest, they would not mind the humidity.
As far as noise, my African grey is the least noisy, followed
by my two macaws. Yes, they scream, but only for a good
reason and not incessantly like a conure of my yellow naped
Amazon. Rico sings and talks at the top of his little bird
lungs all day long.
I'll be sitting in the Hotseat at Eastham's office next week.
