477.0. "Chickens" by ESIS::FEASE (Andrea Midtmoen Fease) Wed Jan 02 1991 14:12

         Just curious - does anyone out there have chickens?

         We have 25 egg-laying hens (no roosters ;-) ), 10 Rhode Island
    Red/Leghorn mixes, 11 Leghorns, 1 Japanese, 1 Plymouth Rock and 2 black
    and tan ones (don't know what the breed name is). We have them in a
    10'x20' shed and keep them for egg production.

         If there are any other "chicken people" out there, maybe we can
    use this note for "chicken info" 8-) .

    I sent a message to one of the morderators (Kristy) and got a auto
    reply that she was away for about a month. I don't know who the other
    moderators are. I hope it comes back up soon.

477.3Future Chicken Lady!!HYEND::ARUSSAUMon Mar 23 1992 18:0628
    Hello to all chicken people out there!!

    I am about to become the *proud* owner of 40 chicks. We are purchasing
    them from Agway in Grafton along with 10 or 12 ducks (both Mallard and
    Peking Whites). We are interested in keeping our hens for egg
    production only as I wouldn't be able to eat Henrietta Hen!!
    My SO would like to get a couple roosters so we could hatch eggs if we
    wanted. This thing might grow depending on the stability of jobs in
    the future.

    Question: Does anyone know if you can have more than 1 rooster? Will
    they fight? Is there a ratio of rooster to hen for fertilized eggs?

    I am also looking for a brooder for the chicks. Am planning on keeping
    the chicks and ducklings together as youngsters, then the ducks go to
    our pond and the chickens to a new 12'x24' chicken house with run.

    The breeds we're getting are 20 Riech Amber Cross and 20 Rhode Island
    Reds. The Crosses are supposed to be crossed from White Leghorns and
    Reds. All our will be brown egg hens.

    Just for fun we are planning on having a little farm as a
    hobby/possible future business. Presently we have 2 horses and are
    building a very nice 6 stall barn. We would like to get some pygmy
    goats and a dozen or so sheep this Spring. Sound like heaven to me...

477.4killer roostersROYALT::PULSIFERUNHAMPERED BY FACTS AND INFORMATIONTue Mar 24 1992 11:1612
    Hi F.C.L,

    Everyone I have known with chickens said one rooster is best, as with 2
    or more one will be dominate, sometimes to the extent of killing the
    weaker one.

    Good Luck,
    Doug

    P.S. you might want to consider some exotic farm animals,LLamas,
    ostrich, vietnamese Pot belly pigs, highlander cows.....

    Question: Does anyone know if you can have more than 1 rooster? Will
    they fight? Is there a ratio of rooster to hen for fertilized eggs?

    << You can have more than one - but not for long. One will eventually
       kill the other.

    << You will be surprised at how a rooster can perform!!

    I am also looking for a brooder for the chicks. Am planning on keeping
    the chicks and ducklings together as youngsters, then the ducks go to
    our pond and the chickens to a new 12'x24' chicken house with run.

    << You can make one out of old windows (if you have them )
    	and a heat lamp. We used a plywood floor with 4 windows for the
    	sides and one for the top (hinged).

    We had goats - which was great fun - for awhile!

    Good luck and have Lots of fun!
