**Help for Lost or Escaped Birds (or Found Ones!)**
Denise Cabral is a licensed wildlife rehabilitator and breeder and exhibitor of
cage birds who is available to speak to groups or talk with individuals on the
phone about ways to safely recapture birds that have gotten loose or that you
find flying around your backyard....or not flying, if they are hurt or ill. :-(
The Massachusetts Audobon Society gives out Denise's number to owners or
finders of exotic cage birds (this means anything from a finch or parakeet to a
macaw), because they focus only on helping wild birds in distress.
Denise is a dynamic speaker (my personal opinion here), and sympathetic to the
needs of someone trying to reclaim a lost pet or help a wandering pet somebody
else lost! She offers advice and counsel over the phone and can sometimes
arrange to help out directly. Denise does not charge fees as such, but does
ask for gas money if you are a long way from her. In her spare time...Denise
is also active in a number of cage-bird associations and societies and has held
offices in many of them (she was in charge of the bird show in Marlboro, MA
this year, for instance).
Denise is located in West Bridgewater, MA and can be reached at 508/586-3293.
(Denise has a husband and small children at home, so please keep this in mind
when calling.) Her number is posted on the public bulletin board of a local
vet clinic that treats birds, so I am taking the liberty of posting it here.

| **Animal Emergency Care/Acton, MA**
The Animal Emergency Care group can be reached after normal vet's office
hours are over, and on weekends and holidays. You can either bring an
animal (bird) in to them (call first, if possible), or they may have a
vet call you back to help you with free phone advice (if you go there,
it is not free).
Their network of participating on-call vets includes those who deal with
birds, so I thought other noters might want to know about them.
Number is 508/263-1742, on Route 2A, in Acton, MA.

| **Humane Society of Greater Hillsboro County (a/k/a Nashua Humane Society)**
The Humane Society of Southern Hillsborough County needs help to continue
its work on behalf of all types of animals, including birds and other creatures
that might not come to mind immediately when you think of a humane society
shelter, known best for its work on behalf of puppies, dogs, cats, and kittens.
I have excerpted a section of a longer memo on the shelter's plans and hopes
(send mail to Mike PICA::PHILBROOK for the complete text), with the thought
that some noters might want to be aware that this organization does, in fact,
help pet birds from time to time, so keep them in mind if you want to be on
their list for adopting birds or if you can provide a foster care home...and
if you need their help in finding a responsible new owner for your pet, give
them a call. They publish a newsletter too....good information, listing of
some of the animals up for adoption, and information on ways you can help.
Side Note: The shelter is also helping out in the community with a pet
therapy program, including pet birds, and pet care education
programs. Pet therapy means taking friendly animals to
nursing homes and other settings to help improve communication
and a sense of belonging for those who have gotten out of touch
with their surroundings. If you have never seen this 'in
action', it might bring tears to your eyes....very special
stuff. Call Judy McAdam at 603/883-4572 for more information.

| I couldn't find a topic just for "found" birds, so I thought I'd put
this here. If there is such a topic, please let me know and I will
move this note.
Contact you have lost a bird:
Diane Phaneuf
225-7062
Yield::Phaneuf
FOUND in Marlboro Mass: Small Tropical Bird.
I do not have a description of this bird, so if you think this might be
your bird, call Diane Phaneuf listed at the top. This bird was found
Friday, November 4th. May have been missing several days, since it was
extremely hungry, and putting down food, was the only reason it was
caught.
