445.0. "Gravel or not to Gravel?" by TJT01::ARMITAGE () Thu Nov 01 1990 17:16

    I give my teil a seperate cup of oyster shells once a week because I
    heard that without she can't digest her food and will get constipated
    and die! I have heard all different stories and for once I would like
    to know the answer. I also give it to my two green singing finches and
    my two zebra finches. Is it O.K. for them or bad for them? I don't
    want to hurt my babies so can someone out there who knows for sure let
    me know. Thanks for your help.

    Hi Lisa,

    I replied to this question about two pages into Note 443.1. Maybe
    that will be of help.

445.2GRAVEL IS FOR THE BIRDS!BRAT::BOURGAULTFri Nov 02 1990 16:2119
    Lisa,

    I give all of my smaller birds (Cockatiels to finches) gravel. They
    each have a cup constantly in their cage. I find some birds relish
    it and others hardly touch it. Whether they need it or not isn't
    the point with me. I just know that they like to munch on it
    occasionally so it is there for them. I have read articles on the
    pros and cons of gravel. Although it sounds like it isn't a necessity
    I find that most of my birds really like to pick at it and it hasn't
    hurt any of them to date. The cockatiels, budgies and lovebirds really
    seem to appreciate it. In the wild, these birds tend to feed from
    the ground and pick up bits of stone and gravel.

    Well that's my two cents. It doesn't hurt to have the gravel on
    hand for them. Plus the oyster shells provide added calcium to their
    diet.

    Regards,
    Denise
